I need some help in finding out the meaning of the name Lyden. It was my grandmothers maiden name, she was a native of Ireland, I believe from County Mayo.
Anyhow, I am pregnant, due in November and would like to use Lyden as a middle name. I would like to know if there is any and what meaning to this name. I have searched under surnames and even first names, but have found absolutely nothing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Looks more Welsh than Irish though would depend on how it was pronunced. Never came across the name before.

Just because Ó Dúill hasn't heard of it doesn't make it not so. This information is from www.ireland.com/ancestor which is part of Ireland.com, The Irish Times (Dublin) web site. Lydon (Lyden is a slightly less common spelling)numerous: Galway-Mayo-Sligo etc. Ir. Ó Loideáin (earlier Ó Lodáin). A name centred in Galway, it occurs as Leyden, Liddane and Ludden. You can go to the website and type in the name for a bit more info on distribution etc.

I see there is a Lyden forum 'room'.

http://genforum.genealogy.com/leyden/messages/222.html

Maybe if you posted there they would help.

James

In an Irish Language forum if you can't see the difference between help with the Irish for 'I love you' and the genealogy of a very unusual surname -then that's ok.
