Daltaí na Gaeilge is a tax exempt, not for profit corporation dedicated
to promoting and teaching the Irish language. The English translation of
our name is "Students of the Irish Language". Although many of our members
are fluent Irish speakers and teachers, most of us are students still
working hard to learn the language. ALL
of our work is done by volunteers. We hope that our homepage will both
encourage and assist you to learn the Irish language, which has the oldest
living literature in Western Europe.
Daltaí na Gaeilge was founded by Ethel Brogan in 1981; and our main purpose is to offer programs to promote and teach the Irish language. Read here about our history. Siopa Dhaltaí offers educational materials as well as various personal items. Educational materials include a dictionary, phrase course and texts on basic Irish grammar and conversation. We also have assorted clothing, "accessories" and art work featuring Irish. Proceeds are used solely for the purpose of promoting and teaching the Irish language. Open-ended discussion areas are available in both Irish and English. General questions about the Irish language should also be posted here.
This section focuses on Verbs and Prepositional Pronouns. Basic rules of grammar are provided, followed by pattern sentences demonstrating the rules. This section provides basic words, phrases (with sound!) and pattern sentences for beginning and intermediate students. Seanfhocal na Seachtaine gives a different Irish proverb (seanfhocal) every week. Each entry includes a pronunciation guide, sound file (featuring native speakers) and a 'loose' English translation. All prior proverbs are available in the Seanfhocail Archive. Crosswords, Quizzes and Simiiles This area concentrates on 'alternative methods' for improving Irish language skills.
