(I am trying to hang on to the wee bit of Irish I learned in the Gaeltacht this summer. Can you VSGs please see if you can understand my writing and give me tips on how to improve, etc. I have no one to talk to so I've decided to sit down and just write each week about what I'm doing, and try to incorporate any new phrases I learn on Gaeilge Amhain - Facebook. I've put the Bearla at the bottom mas uafasach mo chuid Gaeilge and not understandable. Sorry to be a bother. Keep in mind I've only been at this about a year in serious and have only 3 weeks in the Gaeltacht)

Mo Sheachtain – 26 Lunása 2011

Bhí seachtain den chéad scoth agam. Ce raibh an aimsir an té agus mícompordach I dTexas, rinne mé alan tógra i bhfeirim. Bíonn mé ag obair ar dham chun uisce taiscumar a dhéanamh. Tá mé tar eis tógra eile a thosaigh freisin. Tá mé chun an gluaisteán mo sheanathair aiseag a dhéanamh.

Dam a Dhéanamh

Thosaigh mé an dam a dhéanamh chóir a bheith naoi mí anúas. Déannean mé é le cára, Michael, lena bhulldozer. Thosaighmuid le glacadh sios crainn a bhí in aice leis struthán. Beidh an taiscumar cá raibh an struthán. Bhímuid orainn crainn morán a ghearr fá choinne an dam. D’eirigh fearg ar mo bhean cheile mar d’iarraidh sí na crainn a shábáilte. Ní raibh feidir linn iad a shábáilte. D’eirigh an cheist na crainn a bheith fadhb sa teach. Bhí I gconai hait suimhneas faoin na crainn sin. Bhímuid picnic againn ann nuair a bhí óg ár bpaisti. Chaithmuid tráthnónanta uireanta leis ár gcapaill ann. Bhí réamhullmhú riachtanach i bpróiseas an dam a dhéanamh.

Thosaighmuid an talamh a bhógadh I ndiaidh na crainn a glacadh. Bhógmuid talamh ó maidín go trathnóna gach lá. Níl mé cinnte ach creidim gur bhógmuid idir ceithre gcéad míl agus leath milliún méadar slat thalamh. Nílmuid críochnaithe an talamh a bhogadh fós. Sílim go mbeidh mí eile an dam a chriochnú. Anois…..faoin an gluaisteán ba mhaith liom an tógra a thosu faoi lathair.


Aiseag Gluaisteán

Nuair a bhfuair m’athair bas, d’fhág sé an gluaisteán mo sheanathair dom. Is Mercedes 240D clasaic é. Is bliann seachto cathair é. Níl sé ach 74,000 mile aige fosta, agus bainfidh mé alan usaid den gluaisteán fós. Tá plan agam piosana a thosaigh a chennach go luath….b’fheidir an seachtain seo chugainn. Tá tógra seo de dhith orm a dhéanamh mar bhí taisc an gluasiteán ag m’athair agus mo sheanathair.

Bhuel, seo an scéalta agus nuacht anseo I dTexas. Tá suil agam gur b’fheidir liom tuairisc a thabhairt daoibh comh luath agus is b’fheidir.

My Week

I had a first class week. Even though the weather was hot and uncomfortable in Texas, I did a lot of projects in the farm. I was working on a dam to make a reservoir. I have also begun another project. I am about to to restore my grandfather’s car..

Making a Dam

I began to make the dam almost 9 months ago. I am making it with my friend, Michael, and his bulldozer. We began by taking down trees that were next to a creek. The reservoir will be where the stream was. We had to cut a lot of trees to make the dam. My wife became angry because she wanted to save the trees. We were not able to save them. The matter of the trees became a problem in the house. The place under those trees was always peaceful. We had picnics there when our children were young. We sometimes spent afternoons with our horses there. It was necessary preparation in the process of making the dam.

We began moving the earth after the trees were taken. We moved dirt from morning til evening each day. I’m not sure, but I think that we moved between 400,000 and half a million yards of dirt. We are not finished moving dirt yet. I think it will be another month before finishing the dam. Now…..about the car I would like to begin the project right now.

When my dad died, he left me my grandad’s car. It is a classic Mercedes 240D. It is a 74 year model. It doesn’t have but 74K miles also, and I will get a lot of enjoyment out of the car still. I have plans to begin to buy the parts very soon….maybe this next week. I need to do this project because the car was a treasure to my dad and granddad. And, I need a car now.

Well that’s the stories and news from here in Texas. I hope that I’m able to give periodic updates as soon as possible.

"aiseag a dhéanamh" is almost correct according to the dictionary sense of the words: However, it wouldn't really be used that way (aiseag usually means vomit, but can mean restore in the sense of restitution)

I wouldn't be of great help for your Irish, which sounds very good anyway.
I just laughed a lot when I read about your trees and your wife not wanting to hace them destroyed. I had the same problem some years ago when we had our house built. We had some very old nut-trees on this building-site and my wife wouldn't want to have them cut down. At last, she managed to save one and our house has this odd curve which gives it some character! But the architect nearly got mad at that time!!
Funny to see how problems are just the same accross the Atlantic!
