A chairde,

Is maith liom é Daltai.com, ach níl aon rangaí i SC.
(an chuid eile as Béarla)

I've been studying for around 6 years, though I admit its off and on...but it seems as if I progress at two steps forward, one step back, at the pace of a crawl. There are tons of Irish decendants here in SC, especially upstate SC where I'm from, but the lack of any language resource is disheartening. I don't know if anyone here is also from the area, but if you are and know of anything around here I would greatly appreciate knowing of it.

I do know there is the Cara Club, in Greenville, SC. But as far as I know members are rarely active and their one claim to fame is the Return to the Green festival every year for St. Patrick's Day. Otherwise there isn't much heard from them. I believe I will get in touch with them and see if they know any resources for the language or would like to sponsor some. If, so I would gladly post here on this site as well that there is something in SC for people wanting to learn or already trying to learn the language.

Hopefully I will be able to uncover something or else try to start the ball rolling for classes and resources to become available here in the near future. :)

Go raibh maith agaibh do ag éiste!
Slán!

(And sorry for any Gaeilge grammatical errors...feel free to correct me as I'm still learning) ^^

A Chara,

I worked with GlobalGaeilge - a one-to-one Irish language lesson via skype.

Speaking the language is the best way to learn it and this method allows you develop your proficiency as the teacher scaffolds from your present level.

I would recommend it if there are no classes near you.

Rgeards,
Fellow learner

Good luck with it...I tried the same thing in NC about 5 years or so ago...it started and then it fizzled.

MUCH harder to start and maintain than you might think.

Yeah, I'm hoping to have the backing of the Cara Club, but every time I try to look them up or find a contact number or address, the trail runs cold. They used to have a website and everything. Now there isn't any...I hope they are still opperating. I'd hate to lose the Irish festival we have every year. Its the only Irish thing around here to go to most of the time.

But I'll keep looking. Go raibh maith agat, a James! :)

there is a large AOH (Ancient Order of Hibernians) membership in "The Holy City" (Charleston)...might be another source of help and/or support.

Greenville SC is where you live? Why not get up with the Greenville Gaelic Athletic Association? http://greenville.gaa.ie/

Many of our clubs want to promote the Irish language. Maybe alls Greenville GAA needs is a Cultural Advisor, hint, hint. It's a really enjoyable duty. Greenville will def teach you good hurling.

Go raibh maith agat, a Hscottgraves! :)

That sounds really cool. I may check it out. Since it seems the Cara Club may have dissolved for some reason. I think Greenville City Council will probably continue the "Return to the Green" Irish festival since it brings in so much revenue and people, but I can no longer find any proof of the club's continued existance.

I will definately check out the GAA site. I am in Greenville, so I may drop in for a spell. :)

Slán!
