Dia daoibh! Does anyone here watch Ros na Run? I watch it in hopes of improving my ability to speak as well as understand Irish. Was just wondering if there is anyone who is doing the same. grma Slán! Deb |

I have been watching it for a while, but doesn't really seem to help that much. I have heard for years how people learn a language watching TV, not so far for me. I pick up a few words here and there, not enough to understand without reading the text. |

I find it hard to pick up a language from TV - too many visual clues. I've had much more success with radio - I had to concentrate much better, which was much more useful! eadaoin |

I'd say that soaps are hard for learners in any language. As they are often full of abbreviated speech, dialectical speech and idiom- normal native speech, different from what the learner was using in class or in books. Another thing is that the subtitles don't follow the dialogue completely accurately. I think it's normal to have the translation a bit condensed on screen not just Ros na Rún but most subtitled programmes. And of course some is also censored. When Séamus Mhicil Tom swears it's rarely translated accurately. Too shocking for English speakers. LOL |

I have been watchin Ros na Run for a while now also. Personally, I find it very helpful when it comes to learning the language. And the dialectal speech and all the abbreviations double the fun :) now, when I'm speaking Irish at the University, I can always throw in stuff like "ná habair é" or "ag magadh atá tú" ;) |
