Paul, does this book (Irish Roots Magazine) contain the Irish origins of surnames, and an authentic Irish coat of arms for each surname?

Also, will this book be available to buy in stores or must it only be bought online?

Buíochas leat as do chuid eolais,a Phóil.

A Séasan, there is no such thing as an authentic Irish coat of arms. These devices are of Anglo Norman origin in Ireland.

Mar shampla the motto of the O Rourkes :By serving we rule.I can't remember the proper Latin, but the motto was written in London. It means they ruled by serving the Englinsh monarch.Let's all grow up.

Slán agus beannacht leat.

Many coat of arms, including English ones, are not "official". These are exploited now for money in the genealogical market. (I am not referring to anyone here!) Some are just made up with no basis in history. Every Tom, Dick, and Harry family didn't have arms. Traditionally arms were issued to a person and not to a family. This is because they were used as indentification. The next in the generation may assume the coat of arms, but usually modify it in some way. The whole idea of a family, even a royal family, having one coat of arms is not very common at all.

Hi all,

I have passed the questions on to the editor of the magazine, but you can take a look at the sample magazine here:

http://gb.zinio.com/reader.jsp?o=int&prev=sub&offer=405875484

From the look through I saw, there was an article about Ó Colgan and Mac Colgan with a coat of arms.

I'll let you know the response I get from the editor.

Paul

Hi,

I have the editors answer here:

"We have been running a series on Clans of Ireland for the last two years, taking a specific surname and its origin, history etc, complete with coat of arms. The current issue looks at the surname, O'Colan, MacColgan and Colgans. Irish Roots is also currently available from all Easons outlets and some retail outlets throughout the country."

Bhí mé i nuachtánaí "Easons" inniu agus d'fhiafraigh mé faoin irisleabhar "Irish Roots".

Is cosúil go mbíonn sé le fáil gach trí mhíosa, agus beidh sé ar na seilfeanna ar an triú lá is fiche de Lúnasa.Gheobhaidh mé é mar is dócha go mbeidh sé spéisiúil,agus b'fhéidir go mbeidh eolas breise le fáil ar mo shloinne féin.
