We are presenting a certificate to honour a member of our Irish Association who was recently inducted into our local Sports Hall of Fame. Does anyone have any suggestion for an appropriate quotation to add to the certificate. For example, when a member recently received an honorary degree as "Doctor of Letters" for his literary career, on his certificate we added the phrase: Nár laga Dia do lámh in reference to his prolific writing (May God never allow your hand to weaken) Thank you for any appropriate phrase you can provide. - Irish girl in Canada |

Bump. I've not been able to come up with a complimentary sporting phrase. The ones that occur to me - the hurler on the ditch being best etc - are not really suitable. Maybe somebody else has one, or a line of poetry. |

If it's a hand-game - tennis, baseball, hurling, basketball, golf, cricket - what would be wrong with "Nár laga Dia do lámh(a)", and if it's a foot-game - "soccer", "running" (Irish "peile", American football and rugby are neither one nor the other, or a bit of both maybe), why not "Nár laga Dia do chos(a)"??!! Ho ho! |

"Go n-éirí d'oilteacht,do chumhacht,do dhícheall agus do chrógacht leat i gcluiche saoil". "May your skill, your strength, your effort and your bravery guide you in the game of life". Irish girl in Canada, how does that sound?(Please double-check spelling and grammar). |

And of course it should be "Nár lagaí..." (at least in the CO). Oops! |

Hugo: Nár laga Dia do lámh is do neart! would be correct in dialects and in the CO. Funny how the CO is blamed for any peculiarity whereas in fact it is intended to be regular -- and dialect-peculiarity-free |

Thank you to everyone who made suggestions, particularly to Séasán who prbobaly came the closest to what would be suitable for our purposes. I neglected to mention that his achievement was in ice hockey - not exactly a populat Irish sport. :-) Irish gal in Canada |
