Dinneen's doesn't comment on the etymology of this "re" in "gach re lá". Is it the same, at least etymologically, as the ré meaning "month, interval"? |

No, re in the sense of "every second" comes from aile, which is where we get eile also. (Message edited by seánw on February 09, 2010) I ndiaidh a chéile a thógtar na caisleáin.

Aonghus, That link didn't work for me. I got "tossed back". I don't know how to link up with DIL entries. But the entries were aile #1 and re/ré #7. The mention of "gach re" is under section "I As adj" then (d). The "easy" way? For the first one: search "aile", then select page 2. For the second one: search "every other", then select page 2. I ndiaidh a chéile a thógtar na caisleáin.
