I wish to carve the following verse in galic over the entry to my horse barn. " Ride hard, shoot straight and speak the truth" it's called the cowboys creed. Both my parents are no longer alive for me to ask with the translation from English to Irish so I need some help please....thank you |

It's correct, but not as punchy as the English. I'd prefer "inis an fhírinne" to abair. (Tell the truth) An the shoot bit is tricky, beacause "caith" is not specific. lámhach is. I'd suggest recasting the phrase somewhat Marcaíocht géar, Lámhach díreach, Briathra fíor [Hard riding, straight shooting, true words] to get something punchy & genuine. There is the ancinet motto of the Fianna Glaine ár gcroí, neart ár ngéag agus beart de réir ár mbriathar which is often used in similar circumstances. (Purity of our hearts, strength of our limbs and deed according to our word) |

Mind scanning my grammar above, Breandán? My lenition tends to be a bit sloppy - but when I try to think about it, it gets worse. I suspect it ought to be "marcaíocht ghéar, lámhach dhíreach" |

Could one go the whole hog and formulate it completely in the style of the Fianna motto? Géire ár marcaíocht, díríocht ár lámhacht, fírinne ár mbriathra. Is geal leis an bhfiach dubh a ghearrcach féin.

D'fheadfá, ach sílim gur "díreacht ár lámhach" a bheadh ann. |

I suspect it ought to be "marcaíocht ghéar, lámhach dhíreach" marcaíocht is feminine so yes marcaíocht ghéar lámhach is masculine so lámhach díreach briathra is plural so briathra fíora I think.
