Found this term in Dinneen which means 'indifferent' or 'apathetic' etc. Now I've done some googling to get the hang of it as I am trying to figure out why the 'liom' is there even if it is used about a third person, for example 'bhí seisean ar nós cuma liom' ; 'cáineann sí rialtas, atá dar léi, ar nós cuma liom faoin gcomhshaol agus faoin oidhreacht'. so... how then do you say 'I didn't give a damn about it' using this phrase which would be stronger than simply saying 'is cuma liom'. Would really appreciate any help on this as I'm finding it a little confusing. thanks so much. |

As far as I know you have to change "liom" to leat, leis, léithe etc according to the subject: Rinn mé an obair ar nós cuma liom Rinn tú an obair ar nós cuma leat Rinn sé an obair ar nós cuma leis, etc Learn Irish pronunciation here: http://loig.cheveau.ifrance.com/irish/irishsounds/irishsounds.html & http://fsii.gaeilge.org/

Ní hamhlaidh atá. Frása sioctha is ea "ar nós cuma liom", ní athraítear é. |

Choinic mé "ar nós cuma leis" in áiteacha, áfach, chan cuimhneach liom cá háit ach tá mé cinnte fá dtaobh dó (agus cha rabh sé i dtéacs i nGaeilg Chlasaiseach!). Learn Irish pronunciation here: http://loig.cheveau.ifrance.com/irish/irishsounds/irishsounds.html & http://fsii.gaeilge.org/

Chuala mé nath ar Raidió na Gaeltachta uair: Bhí sé ina sheasamh ansin ag an gcoirnéal ar nós cuma liom cuma dhom! .i. as if he didn't care and it didn't affect him. |

"I didn't give a damn about it" would be "Ba chuma sa tsioc liom faoi" which is more polite than "Ba chuma i dtí diabhail liom faoi". I'm not sure of the origin of "i dtí diabhail" or even how to spell it. It is a common expletive and in a God-fearing community any reference to the Devil is taken seriously. [i dtí? i dtigh? go dtí? = go dtaga an diabhal?] In Irish the curses are religious: ar m'anam / upon my soul; in English sexual. |

Hmm... as ábhar... "Go dtite an Diabhal leat!" An oibríonn an abairt seo mar mallacht? Labhraítear "Piru sinut periköön!" i bhFionlainn ó am go ham, ceapaim gur aistriúchán ceart atá ann. Nó an bhfuil an mícheart agam athuair? Tine, siúil liom!

Bheadh ciall ar leith le "Go dtite tú ag an Diabhal" (May you fall to the Devil('s share) |
