Hi. I am looking for any poem from 1970 onwards - but I personally would prefer anything more modern. Titles will be great - reasons why you like them or what makes them stand out or why you find them special would be nice too. Thanks. |

One of my Irish language students in Tokyo was a poet and liked to bring along Irish poems to go over in class. One that comes to mind was about a woman who had lost two relatives (her husband and her son, I think?) to drowning accidents and had a surviving son or daughter. The image was of a boat on the shore with two ropes anchored in the sea and one to land. She wanted to throw herself into the ocean to go and meet her loved ones but she still had one loved one on land keeping her there (and alive). Sorry, it's not much help. Unfortunately, I lost all my notes in the move back to Oz. (Googling didn't turn up anything, either.) |

Hi Conchubhair. There is a poem that I adore written by Simon Ó'Faoláin. I sadly don't have it here but I promise I will root it out at the weekend and post up the text. It was amazing.. he is from Kerry I believe and writes in the finest Munster Irish. |

ROGHA AN FHILE le Gearóid Mac Lochlainn Táim i dteannta ag fadhb Shíneach na teanga seo- an Ghaeilge. Cad chuige a meallann sí mé? Níor tógadh mé leí. Ní cainteoir líofa mé fiú (Cibé rud sin). Ach mealltar mé mar mheisceoir meidhreach chuig cúlán ceoil nó seisiún rúnda a bhfuil leid le tabhairt chun fáil isteach. Cad tá le déanamh? Tá mé i bponc. Níl an t-am agam le bheith ag slogadh siar foclóir ná an chleasaíocht agam le blas na Gaelthachta a bhrú ar mo chuid cainte, is níl an fonn orm bheith gafa i ndianchúrsa eile le lucht meánaicme Bhaile Átha Cliath. Tabhair break dom, a chara. Is céard faoin cheird seo bua na filíochta? Adhmhaím don domhan gur fearr liom Ó Dónaill ná Dineen. Is tá an saol gairid, róghairid le bacadh lena leithéid de shean-Ghaeilge, meán-Ghaeilge, filíocht shiollach, meadaracht is an tioránach dorcha sin, rófhada sa diallait - Traidisiún. Cut to the chase, ní féidir liom seasamh os bhur gcomhair lán och och ón is och ón ó. Foc sin faoi dhó! Ba mhian liom labhairt gan chosc, gan cheangal. Ach cad is fiú é mura n-éisteann tú? Fágtar ar an trá fholamh mé, idir dhá chomhairle, idir dhá thine Bhealtaine is b'fhéidir idir cúpla seanfhocal eile nach bhfuil ar bharr mo theanga. Ó go n-ithe an diabhal thú!

LÁR NA CRUINNE le Gabriel Rosenstock Aimsigh lár na cruinne, arsa Krishnamurphy Conas? arsa na desceabail. Tuig, arsa Krishnamurphy, Tuig nach tusa lár na cruinne Is osclófar lár na cruinne dhuit. AE PHÁIDÍN le Áine Ní Ghlinn In ainneoin chomhairle an dochtúra ní éireoidh Páidín as an ól Cad is fiú d'ae a phurgú is do chroí istigh á scoilteadh ag an uaigneas? AN GIORRIA le Mícheál Ó hAirtnéide Ba dhomhan glas é. Bhí smaointe glasa ag lúbadh go ciúin i bpáirc a haigne. Boladh bó, boladh bainne- forbairt fhréamh-mhilis faoi thalamh. Chuala sí toirneach. Thit an spéir ar a droim D'alp an sliabh an ghrian siar. Múchadh an domhan mar chipín solais lá gaoithe. Bhíog a hál istigh faoi chlúmh beo a boilg. Bhí a súile ar oscailt, screamh an bháis ag lot an ghliondair, ag lot na loinreach. Maith dom é, a chailín Ní raibh aon scian agam chun do chlann a shábháil. Maith dom é. Ó go n-ithe an diabhal thú!
