I was watching a programme on comhrá and the woman who was being interviewed was saying that there is a mini Gaeltacht (new Gaeltacht) in Kildare in ''Cill Mhochriodóg'' where its stronger than ever and there is only Gaelscoileanna there.

Does anyone else have any more information on this? How is Irish there, plans, etc?

There are many such mini-Gaeltachts unrecognised by Officialdom where the Land Commission divided big farms among "migrants" from the West -- not just from the Gaeltacht. Cill Mhochriodóg originally consisted of families from the Ros a Mhíl area of South Conamara and their descendants are still living in the area. Other families from that area got land in other parts of Kildare and contact is maintained between them and "an dream thiar" and Rath Cairn in Co Meath. These people are proud of their heritage but not in the way of dilettantes. It is their own and they know it.

In the early years in Kildare they got little recognition now with the Gaelscoil movement they have support and they avail of it. Did someone tell us that this area has the highest census return of daily Irish speakers outside the Gaeltacht?

The new Straitéis don Ghaeilge includes provision for recognition of children reared through Irish no matter where. Children reared through English in the "Official Gaeltacht" will no longer have preference.

That sounds like Kilmaccreddock in leixlip, North Kildare. I could be wrong but that's the name of a rural area on the Maynooth side of Leixlip. I live right beside it, could walk there from my house in 3 mins. As faras I know, there's no Irish there. That particular area is filled with a few families - the Lennons etc have their extended family there but I doubt it's a Gaeltacht. None of them speak Irish and they make up a huge proportion of that tiny area.

Cailín I'd say that's the spot. From googling Cill Mhochriodóg + Cill Dara it came up that in 2003 people from Rath Chairn and Cill Mhochchriodóg visited the Irish Department in Maynooth so there are clearly second generation speakers the offspring of the original 1930's families from Conamara who are living there still but maybe they are not raising their own families with Irish they would be in their sixties now I guess. It would be great if you could visit the area and ascertain if there are older native speakers in their 50's and 60's living there. thanks for the info.
