Hey there folks! Today I came across 'go mór mhór' which I think means 'especially' and it's one I had forgotten- I have been hearing, and using, 'go háirid' and 'go háirithe' a lot more often. Is 'go mór mhór' more natural way to say especially, or are all three in the dialects? Also I'm thinking 'go háirid' is Conamara and 'go háirithe' is Munster more so.. is that correct? Thanks for any help in advance! Sinéad |

Just noticed FGB gives 'go mór mór'. So is it actually that when pronounced it sounds more like 'go mór mhór'? |

Ó Dónaill has "go mór mór" for "especially" and gives "go háirithe má" for "especially if". Surprisingly Ó Dónaill simply refers the person looking for "áithrid" to "áirithe". IMHO they are not the same: "duine áirithe" means a particular person (whom I do not wish to name) and "duine áithrid" means a person that is a bit odd, apart, not like another, etc. Regarding "go mór mór" I think this is the best pronunciation. "Mór" is used as a prefix so often with an aspiration on the initial letter of the following word [mórmheas; mórsheisear, mórshiúl etc] that it would be easy to imagine it should be followed by an aspiration here too thus making a "comhfhocal" of the two words. Ó Dónaill and de Bhaldraithe both give "go mór mór" as the correct Irish for "especially" (in particular contexts). "áithrid" is from Connacht Irish (?) while "áirithe" is more widely used. Until I started to use the internet I was hardly even aware of "dialects". It was all just Irish. I suppose being a learner I am never going to pass for a native-speaker from Mullach idir an Dá Sháile anyway so the Standard is good enough for me. |
