How would one say "How was your trip to Ireland?"? I am having trouble with the "how was" part and the form that Ireland would take. GRMA |

"Conas a d'éirigh" b'fhéidir - ar nós "conas atá" is araile. Tá fáilte roimh chuile cheartú!

Fáilte a Janet - Welcome! As a beginner, you may be slightly perplexed by the answers you've gotten to your question. So I just thought I'd mention that there are different ways of saying "How was your trip to Ireland?" based on the dialect being used, two of which are shown above. Conas ar éirigh le do thuras go hÉirinn? (Munster dialect.) Cad é mar a bhí do thuras go hÉirinn? (Ulster dialect) Here's my try at the Connemara Dialect: Cén chaoi a raibh do thuras go hÉirinn? (Connemara dialect) You'll notice that the part for "your trip to Ireland" is the same for all three dialects but that the part for "how was" is different for each dialect. You may want to choose a particular dialect in your beginning studies and once you get a good handle on the workings of that dialect, then get familiar with the other two dialects. Just a suggestion. For some introductory info on the Irish dialects see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_language#Dialects (Message edited by Student on September 03, 2009) www.irishbooksandgifts.com

A Student, whoever you are. That was a very kind thing to do. And helpful for all us beginners. Thank you very much. I am a rank beginner. And I mean the rankest of the rank. Please be kind.

Go raibh míle maith agaibh! A Aonghuis, Is maith liom! (sin é)? A Abigail, Nílim cinnte thuigim na difríocht idir ar éirigh/d'éirigh. A Student Taim ag foghlaim Gaeilge Cois Fharraige, mar is “Learning Irish” le Micheál Ó Siadhail agam, amháin. Ach is fearr liom Gaelainn Mumhan, Please feel free to correct the errors I'm sure I've made, anyone; it helps me learn. Arís, grmma |

quote:You'll notice that the part for "your trip to Ireland" is the same for all three dialects Yes and no, as it's different in ways that aren't reflected in the orthography. I would write "le do thuras go hÉirinn" but say "led thrus go hÉiring". |
