A chairde gaeil, How would I say I miss something in Irish mar shampla "I miss a good pint of Guinness", or "I miss eating herrings" also I´m guessing that to say I miss a person is written in a different manner? go raibh míle maith agat Diarmuid |

Déarfainnse: Tá ... uaim ("is from me") Tá ... de dhíth orm ("is of need on me") Tá pionta Guinness uaim / de dhíth orm Tá uaim scadáin a ithe To miss a person, e.g. "I miss you": Airím uaim thú. Cronaím thú. Lars |

If you can't get a pint because you are abroad, say. I would say something like: Braithim uaim pionta 7rl. Maidir le daoine, aontaím le Lars. |

I am of the half-informed opinion that "tá ... uaim" and "tá ... de dhíth orm" actually mean "I want..." rather than "I miss...". In other words, it's what you'd say when you think you actually have a chance of getting it. When you think you don't, you're in the domain of "I miss..." and there I would agree that "braithim/airím/mothaím ... uaim" are the appropriate expressions. The three verbs, "braithim/airím/mothaím", are all pretty much synonymous and mean something like "feel". I would disagree that there is a distinction between missing people and mising objects like beer. I'd happily use the same expressive arsenal for both: "mothaím pionta pórtair uaim", "mothaím mo chailín uaim". But then again, I am only a second-hand Irish speaker. Táimse idir dhá chomhairle freisin maidir le hidirdhealú idir dhaoine agus nithe a bheith imithe uaim. Ach is gnách go mbíonn an mothúcháin níos doimhne nuair is duine atá i gceist. Dála an scéal, ná bí ag tabhairt droch mheas ar do chainteoireacht dóchais. Is minic an cheist cíortha níos doimhne agatsa agus ag do leithéidí seachas againne nach mbraitheann an tochas airithe sin. |
