Hi,

I am wanting to include the following text in an Irish theatre piece I am creating, but my irish actress is struggling with the text. I wondered if someone could give me a phonetic translation of this? (And I don't know the international phonetic alphabet...sorry...) It would be much appreciated.

Tha mi fo ghruaimean
'S gur fhad o'n uair sin
Mo ghaol a' bhuachaill
'S cha chual e fhËin e.

Nach mi bha gÚrach
An duil ri pÚsadh
Gun stoc gun stÚras
Gun or gun Bheurla.

Nach mi bha gÚrach, Nach mi bha gÚrach

Thanks Jo

I'm a relative beginner, but this is close to how I
would pronounce it in American English.

Tah me fo greemeen
sgur ahd onu-er shin
ma heel ah boo-ahl
scahoo-al eh hane eh.

nach me vagurach
ahn dillreepoosah
Gun stock guhree stoorahs
Gun or guhree Verlah

Nach me vahgurach, nach me vagurach.

Mo do pingin, (my two cent)
Faber MacMhaolain

I'm sorry but that text is in Scottish Gaelic, not in Irish...
Roughly :

Tha mi fo ghruaimean > Ha mee fo ghroo-eh-mahn
'S gur fhad o'n uair sin > S goor at ohn oo-eth shin
Mo ghaol a' bhuachaill > Muh ghöl uh voo-uh-khell'
'S cha chual' e fhèin e. > S kha khoo-ull ah hayn ah.

Nach mi bha gòrach > Nakh mee va gaw-rokh
An dùil ri pòsadh > Un nool thee paw-sugh
Gun stoc gun stòras > Goon stokh-k goon staw-russ
Gun òr gun Bheurla. > Goon awr goon Vee-ahr-luh.

kh is the guttural sound as in "loch" or as in Spanish "jota".
Gh is a gargling sound (like a hard g but you let the air going through)
ll' is a bit like lli in "million".
ö is an unrounded oo-sound (pronounce an oo while smiling, ie. your lips don't go forward)
