I finally figured out how to easily make fadas with the Irish keyboard setting that comes in Macintosh. If anyone needs to know this, feel free to email me. And the setting works while you're in Daltai, email, etc. Tá sé iontach! Slán, Faber |

Mac users have been making fadas (and other diacriticals) quite painlessly for about 20 years or so. Apart from the standard "option-e-vowel" combo, there was an extension (for OS 7 through OS 9) by Michael Brady -- "Irish Accessories" -- available online since the early '90s that simplified getting the fadas . . . simply "option-vowel". Since OS X was introduced, the Irish keyboard (incorporating the fada method Brady used) is now a system preference. http://www.gaeilge.org FRC - Fáilte Roimh Cheartúcháin

On my Macintosh go up to the draw down menu on the far upper left little Apple icon. Then go to system preferences. Go to the "International" icon and click on it. You will see "language" "format" "Input menu" all in the top of the box. Go to the "input menu" one and click it. Follow the languages on the left down to "Irish". There are two Irish, but I just clicked the plain one. Then, you can also put "Gaeilge" in the left column above English by dragging it up. This makes alot of your other computer functions appear in Gaeilge. WARNING: This may screw up some of the functions of peripherals you have plugged into the computer. I found my Verizon Blackberry Phone won't initialize and get me on the internet unless I am in the USA position. Then, as you exit all of this, you will look up in the right corner and see a little flag. In my case, it is an American flag. Click on it and there is a drop down menu to an Irish flag. If you click on it, you can just press the "option" key and any vowel you choose to add a FADA to. It works easy and great. Thanks Faber |
