I was looking up a few things on Focal.ie today and on a whim entered "plutocracy". Instead of the expected "maoinlathas"/"maoinfhlaitheas" the sole result was "plútacratachas". Now to be fair, as a transliteration this was fine (I wouldn't have been surprised to find some monstrosity like "plútácrasaí") but I was disappointed that a perfectly useful translation like "maoinfhlaitheas" which - (1) shows the full potential of the flexibility and richness of Irish, (2) would make sense to an Irish speaker who was unaware of the meaning of the word "plutocracy" and (3) is in accord with other similar terms like "daonfhlaitheas" and "uathfhlaitheas" - wasn't even given as an alternate form. The focus of those responsible for developing Irish terminology seems to be overly directed towards simply transliterating the Latin-based vocabulary of English rather than making use of the great virtues of Irish. Tá an dá leagan ag de Bhaldraithe. B'fhiú scríobh chuig seachas clamhsán anseo! Bíonn an Coiste Téarmaíochta sásta athmhachnamh a dhéanamh, agus gach seans go mbeadh an féidireacht ag foireann focal an leagan eile a chuir isteach ó tharla é ag de Bhaldraithe. |

Nó b'fhéidir díreach chuig an gcoiste, nó chucu araon http://www.irish.ie/foras/default.asp?catid=50 Feicim go bhfuil an ghnáth easpa forais faoin bhForas - ní luaitear focal.ie ar an suíomh úd |

Ach nílid! Má tá argóint le déanamh agat - agus tá, agus de Bhaldraithe ar do thaobh - is dóigh liom go gcuirfear san áireamh ar a laghad é. Pé scéal é, bheadh r-phost scríofa chomh gasta céanna agat agus mír anseo. |

I was presented with the term "meitacognaíocht" for metacognition, by the experts (even though the english word has only been in use for 30 years). But "Lateral Thinking" got them stumped. That term is 50 years old but no translation yet. About the most satisfactory so far is "Smaointeoireacht cliathánach"! any suggestions? |

Cad tá cearr le smaointeoireacht cliathánach? B'fhearr liom "Machnamh", áfach. The translation process is demand driven. Focal has taobhsmaointeoireacht http://www.focal.ie/Search.aspx?term=taobhsmaointeoireacht&lang=2 |
