Itheann an bhean an tae ar a ceathair gach lá.

Just ran across this line in print on another site. Do the Irish use "tae" to indicate the afternoon snack the English eat, or do they only "drink" their tea?

Not to be confused with my uncle who always "drank" his breakfast of Old Bushmill.

Is ait an mac an saol agus fáilte roimh cheartúcháin.

It is unusual usage. The evening meal is called "tae" all right, but 4 is an odd time for it, and I wouldn't have used itheann with it.

Bíonn tae ag an mbean um a ceathar gach lá

would be what I would write.

B'fhéidir, uair réidh?

(Is uimhir réidh é ceathair - failed attempt at humor on my part).

Ouch. Tuigim. Níor rith an chiall sin le réidh liom.

Cothrom a bheadh agamsa ar uimhir mar sin, ach feicim gur réidh atá ag focal.ie

An tae réidh ag uair réidh, agus gach ré cheist faoi anseo!

The evening meal is called "tae" all right...

An ionann tae agus dinnéar nó suipéar?

Ní ionann.
I lár an lae a bhíodh dinnéir ann, agus is ionann suipéir agus supper an Bhéarla, sé sin, . greim bídh roimh dul a luí.

Caithfear cuir leis sin áfach gur "bia na maidine" agus "bia an tráthnóna" a bhí ag an tOileánach.

Maidir le "tae" mar bhéile, seo cúpla líne as gearrscéal le Biddy Jenkinson:

Ar ith tú lón inniu?’
‘Níor ith.’
‘Maith mar a tharla. Beidh cuma ocrach diaganta ort. Inis di go bhfuil tú ar céalacan. Níl ach dhá bhreac agam don tae.’

Tea is usually a light meal served in the late afternoon.
