"de chailleach" agus "d'úll" a déarfainn - ach tá dul an ordaithe go paiteanta agat, bail ó Dhia ort!

Aye, because "den chailleach" = of the witch ; "den úll" = of the apple.
There is no indefinite article in Irish, so no "a" : a witch is "cailleach".

I understand your point, Peter, but using "an" would lead me to believe that he's referring to a specific witch/apple (the witch in the corner/the apple in the basket)?
Also, I assume the command is to one person only for nobody has mentioned using "Déanigí" for Do/Make to more than one (for learners who may not know this).

"Déan aigí" As I mentioned in this thread, I'm seeing this error often from speakers who mother tongue is (presumably) a variety of English without a grammaticalised second-person plural. (Message edited by Domhnaillín_Breac_na_dTruslóg on October 21, 2008) |
