Alba, the new Gaelic television station, starts transmission this week.

In a way it's a pity that not more cooperation exists between Gaeilge and Gaeidhlig with regards to coordinating orthography and neologisms and the like so that they don't drift unnecessarily further apart.

Of course, everybody wants to keep their own identity but the way things are going both languages are being developed in such a way that they are becoming mutually increasingly more unintelligible. With a total native speaking population of less than 150,000 a bit of a luxury I think.

After all, ní neart go cur le chéile!

In many ways I'm dreading the beginning of this channel because I know it will put TG4 to shame and I genuinely hate to see that.

if that is true, and they're not bright enough to make changes based on the better model, get ready to write letters insisting that they do...

...not that that's the only solution, but honestly, better models coming up can be a good thing in virtually all aspects of the language that aren't doing as well as they could be...

I think James forgot the irony warning on his post!

I don't know what their funding will be like, but as I understand it they are operating under a Public Service rather than a (partly) advertising funded model.
