I don't think you can use "roimh" as a conjunction. Have to use "sula(r)", "sulmá" (I dunno what sulmá becomes before a verb in the past tense) or in Munster "sara(r)", etc. Bhí sí ina mainicín sular thosaigh sí ag éirí ramhar (to become fat) Donegal: Bhí sí ina mainicín sular thoisigh sí a dh’éirí ramhar. Kerry, a try: Bhí sí ina mainicín sarar thosnaigh sí ag éirí ramhar. Learn Irish pronunciation here: www.phouka.com/gaelic/sounds/sounds.htm & http://fsii.gaeilge.org/

Fuair mé giota beag eile ó Lars: *nualeargais* "sula / sular is a combination of sul ( = before) and the indirect relative particle a / ar, hence sul a/ar is also possible. Regional: instead of sula also sara / sarar (Munster), sol (with dir. relative clause), sola, sul má (Connemara), roimh (Mayo)" |
