Haigh,

whenever I watch Ros na Rún I hear people using word "geabhar" (?) in the meaning "favour". The dictionary gives "fabhar", but I am sure I hear [g-] or maybe [g`-] there. Does anyone know what is the word in Conamara?

I know the word "gar" with the meaning "favour"... It isn't pronounced like "geabhar", as far as I know, but maybe it's the same word...

medial -bh- is not pronounced in Munster, just lengthens the vowel, so maybe it is - just I hear it like [gA:r] and imagine it is "gábhar"?

Bheinn sách cinnte gur "gar" atá i gceist.

gar [ainmfhocal firinscneach den chéad díochlaonadh]
cóngar, deiseacht (i ngar dom); seirbhís, áis, beart fónta (gar a dhéanamh do dhuine); maitheas (níl gar i gcaint).

fabhar [ainmfhocal firinscneach den chéad díochlaonadh]
gníomh cineáltais; áis, gar (do dhuine); dea-thoil, dea-mhéin (tá Dia i bhfabhar aige).
