Friend of mine asked how to order "Whisky, neat" in Irish. Is there a specific word for "neat," as in "no ice," in this context? How would I render this? |

GRMA! And while we're at it... my little dictionary has three different words for ice: oighear siocán sioc Are these interchangeable or do they have different meanings? |

I would have though the first was ice, the other two frost, but maybe there is some overlap le díol

B’fhéidir "uisce beatha, gan oighear". I also think that "sioc" and "siocán" are only used when talking about the weather. Learn Irish pronunciation here: www.phouka.com/gaelic/sounds/sounds.htm & http://fsii.gaeilge.org/

oighear [ainmfhocal firinscneach den chéad díochlaonadh] uisce cruaite ag an sioc, uisce reoite. sioc [ainm briathartha][ainmfhocal firinscneach] cáithníní oighir ina mbrat ar an talamh; cur seaca (níl sé ag sioc anocht); téachtadh, cruachan, stalcadh (lig don mhoirtéal sioc; sioctha leis an bhfuacht). siocán [ainmfhocal firinscneach den chéad díochlaonadh] sioc.
Is fíor do Lughaidh gur le haimsir a bhaineann sioc 7 siocán. |

Ba cheart go mbeadh fhios ag Lughaidh gur siocán a deirtear in Uladh don uisce reoite a chuirtear ar uisce beatha. Dála an scéil Whiskey a scrítear i mBéarla na hÉireann, amhail Béarla Mheiriceá. |

A Lughaidh, ná bíodh tú ar easpa uisce nó ar easpa beatha riamh! |
