That's sad. When I got "suaimhneas" for a memorial tattoo on my back/shoulder, I had my mom come with me to double-check the spelling and placement. The artist had copied the word wrong, so thank God I had my mom check it. I had to have him change it before it was inked, but I am just glad I caught it before I was stuck with it forever! As some of you might remember, I was pretty obsessive about my tattoo translations on this board for months before I actually got the ink (because I wanted to avoid having the wrong word--in terms of spelling or meaning--on me forever).

Months is overkill. If you get the same answer from half a dozen native/fluent people, ya can go ahead with it. A week at most is what you need to make sure the translation's right.

I'd err at the other extreme; I think a few years (or many years!) would be a sensible amount of time to think on something which will be with you for life. Too many people rush into these things, inking themselves with words/images that interest them when they're young . . . but about which they couldn't care less when they're a bit older (and may even later be regarded with embarrassment). A bit of reflection/patience might do many people some good.

If you need that much time to think about it, then ya really shouldn't be doing it. I've thought about getting tattoos before, but none of them were like "yeah I'll go get this done now". I agree with the idea that they're with you for life, and so you should try anticipate how you'll feel about them when you're 40, 50, 60...

But then again everyone is different. What turns ME away from tattoos is that I don't even bother trying to anticipate what I'll be like when I'm older... I'd shooting in the dark.

I personally have no desire to get any tatoos but they can be nice and I understand why others might want them. Maybe I'm the only one here but I sort of feel bad for people who were given wrong tatoo advice and are now stuck with it.

I suppose there's two main options:

1) Tattoo removal
2) Tattoo covering-up

Even in 2007, I don't think option 1 is too attractive... I think it's still like trying to wash oil out of your favourite jumper. Option 2 though is pretty popular, whereby you get another tattoo to cover the old one -- although this wouldn't be very viable in the case of the "drugáil saor" tattoo unless they get large eagle wings across their upper back or something.

I had a friend of mine before that had a large hideous scar and he often spoke of getting it covered with a tattoo... haven't seen him in years though, don't know if he got it done.

Anyway I can think of far worse fates than getting a bad tattoo: A mechanic near me unscrewed the cap of a car radiator while it was hot and scalding radiator fluid shot all over his face. I haven't seen him but I hear it's pretty bad.

I suppose ta an ceart agat, it isn't the end of the world. But if people poke fun it can't feel good. About covering a scar with a tatoo, that is a good idea, never thought of it.

Well, Fear_na_mbróg, it took months because people couldn't agree on the handful of different translation ideas I had posted. "Suaimhneas" was the only straight-forward word I wanted, and only one person would even comment on it. I had to keep pushing the other translations because I couldn't ever get more than one or two people to comment, then they would disagree or answer the request sarcastically like I was an idiot (I never had 6 people agreeing on anything). Sorry, but I'm not an idiot--I just like to know I have the right word for the meaning I wanted (for a memorial tattoo that I got after my grandpa died suddenly, and I waited 6 months after his death to decide exactly what I wanted). It is not something I will ever regret because I was very close to him and think of him every day. So, please think twice before being such an a** again. Not that your attitude makes a difference to me, but it makes me think twice about going to this board for help or advice.

at 17 and the latest one at 40. I did have 2
replaced with a cover up... they just became somewhat distorted with age and weight gain an loss etc.

just be cause, my brother did that with really bad results
but FNB it is gonna be with me for a long time so it can take months to form a life time decision on your body and yes some temperance is very good it can prevent dreadful mistakes, even with my poor limited Irish I realised that tatoo was dreadfully wrong and i did laugh at it. poor girl
