I'm extremely novice within the Gaelic language and am in need of assistance with the pronunciation of a few names. I could desperately use some help with the phonetics; i.e. how they'd be pronounced in English. 1.Nighean 2.Sileas 3.Inghean 4.Fenella 5.Lioslaith Thank you, Thank you! |

Jeeez the only one of them i've ever come across is the last one - Lisa in english (i think!) 1. N-eye-in / Nee-in 2. Sy-las / Silas 3. In-gin / In-ghin 4. Fen-ila 5. Lee-sa Someone else may have a better idea... A people without a language of its own is only half a nation.A nation should guard its language more than its territories, 'tis a surer barrier and a more important frontier than mountain or river

"how they'd be pronounced in English." The use of the modal verb is key, 'how would they be'. They look liek they were got on a list of old Gaelic names, so I will give a suggestion in modern form. 1.Nighean -->Nían 2.Sileas --> Sileas 3.Inghean --> Inían 4.Fenella --> feanala/feneala? 5.Lioslaith --> Liosla 1.Nían -->Nyeen 2.Sileas -->Shilas 3.Inían -->Inyeen/Nyeen 4.Feanala/feneala? -->fanala/fenala 5.Liosla -->Lyusla y=y in yes |

Caution - both 1 and 3 ar archaic forms of "Iníon", daughter, and not names at all. |

Would #4 be a variation of Fionnula? Is minic a bhris beál duine a shrón. Fáilte roimh cheartú, go deo.

Here's my dhá phingin: 1. Gaidhlig for "daughter" 2. Gaidhlig for Síle 3. Older form of Irish "iníon" = daughter 4. Anglicised form of Fionnghuala 5. Gaelicisation of surname "Leslie" |
