Keeping things light-hearted.. Do any of you look for Gaeilge in a partner or would it just be a bonus? My boyfriend only has the typical "cúpla focal" from school, but he makes an effort for me and has learned tonnes :) A people without a language of its own is only half a nation.A nation should guard its language more than its territories, 'tis a surer barrier and a more important frontier than mountain or river

I met my wife because of Irish... In one of my trips to Ireland, I set out to compare Irish with Scottish, a language I am more familiar with. I met my wife at a pub just down the road from Queen's. She was studying Irish there, and in particular, she was studying the seperation of Irish and Scottish!!! It is a definite bonus in our relationship. It gives us something to do together, she is learning Scottish and I am learning Irish...so we have each other to tease in our mistakes. Also, since we live in a 100% English speaking area of the United States it gives us a little bit of privacy. My wife has a rather thick northern accent which hasn't really lessened since she's been here. It doesn't take long for people to pop out of the woodworks to gather around to listen to her speak. |

I very very much want a hot Irish man who speaks Irish. Then again I'd be happy with someone who speaks Irish, whether he were Irish or not. :) Granted these are not the most important things I need in a man but I'd really like to have them. Beir bua agus beannacht |

My studying Irish in earnest began three years ago when my wife signed me up to take language lessons. She did not sign herself up! I have been hooked ever since but she alas has no interest other than everything else about our heritage. Ach is maith an bhean í. Maidhc

Ríona sounds like i'm just what you're looking for!!! Lol.. Sin deas Maidhc agus Gav.. My ex, we met through bebo him complimenting me on my language skills strangely enough! He was great in the way that if a Gaeilgeoir spoke english to him he'd only ever reply in Irish, and he'd always lash in the cúpla focal when talking in english, even with foreigners.. I love that! We need more of that! Sula dtabharfainn lámh agus focal d'éinne, chaithfimís bheith ar aon tuairim i dtaobh rudaí móra an tsaoil - an Ghaeilge ina measc, is dócha! Ach níl cónaí orm in Éirinn, mar sin níor phraiticiúil liom a bheith chomh picky sin, an dtuigeann tú? Bheinn breá sásta mar sin dá mbeadh suim ag an mbuachaill i dteangacha, ina bhfoghlaim is ina labhairt. Ceapaim gurbh fhéidir é a spreagadh ins an Ghaeilge gan mórán dua más amhlaidh. Tá fáilte roimh chuile cheartú!
