Diat guit.

If I were in Ireland today, in Dublin or Galway, and wanted to practice my limited Irish (not even sure I spelled "hello" correctly), could I? Or would it be like "My Name is Yu Ming?" ("Yu Ming Is Ainm Dom") no Irish anywhere in the city, except on the signs?

I'm thinking about visiting Ireland in the next year or two. I expect to go to the cities of Dublin and Galway, perhaps I'll rent a car and drive around the island, I'm not sure yet. Since I'll be going with friends who don't share my current enthusiasm learning Irish, I'm not sure how long they'd tolerate being at a pub in a gaeltacht listening to me stumble through Irish while they're twiddling their thumbs...

Go rah maigh agat!

There are other things to do in Irish pubs besides twiddling thumbs.

You might find more Irish spoken in the pubs in and around Galway than in Dublin. That's just my limited experience in traveling to both cities.

I personally did not prefer Dublin, though one probably ought to go once to say that they did. There isn't a lot of Irish to be seen on the surface there, but there are some places you can go and hear it. Aonghus and I went to Caifeuna and I liked it there, yummy food and the waitresses will talk to you in Irish.

Someone more experienced than I could maybe tell you some other places to go.

I would say that you must go to the Gaeltacht too because it is very nice there to be sure.
