I've been wondering for some time about the suffix -(a)is
used in names for foreign languages eg. Gearmáinis, Breatnais, Spáinnis etc.
Is it of native Irish origin or is it a loan from another language, possibly Germanic?

Ceist shuimiúil. Is dócha gurbh é Seathrún Céitinn a d'úsáid an focal "Fraingcis" den chéad uair. Ní raibh an foirceann -is in úsáid i ré na Sean-Ghaeilge, go bhfios dom. Mar shampla:

Laiten = Laidin
Gréc = Gréigis
Ebrae = Eabhrais

Caminante no hay camino, se hace camino al andar.
