This is more of a non-Gaeilge post...

I came across this thread about Leinster Irish from last year...
http://www.daltai.com/discus/messages/13510/14080.html

and in it, Breacban mentions books by the O Byrnes and Dorans as examples of Leinster Irish dialects...this interests me a lot since my own Irish ancestors were Dorans who left in 1825.

I'm just trying to find out where more info on the writings of the Dorans are so I'm hoping Breacban or anyone else has some ideas...

From Breacban: "as to the dorans they were the file to the kavanghs so I would imagine they wrote in the dan direach so id check any leaving cert hons. text."

Any info on the Dan Direach?

"The Dorans were file to the Kavanaghs and were based at Pallas just outside Gorey in Wexford."

My understanding was that the O'Dorans/O Deorain were breitheamh ('brehon', or lawgiver) to the MacMurrough-Kavanaghs of Ui Cinnsealaigh. This territory took in all of the present Co. Wexford as well as adjoining parts of south Wicklow and Carlow..

or is file/fili an umbrella term to describe the learned classes? I didn't think they were poets..

Also found this at http://www.goireland.com/genealogy/scripts/Family.asp?FamilyID=103

"In 1540 they were seated at Chappell, Co. Wexford, now a well farmed area but then almost a wilderness, with the Blackstairs Mountain in the background." Haven't been able to locate exactly where in Wexford this is...

I know there's a placename of Doransland at Kilmuckridge in Wexford which doesn't seem too far away from Gorey...

Any Wexford residents here? =)

Hope Breacban sees this.

"Aos léinn," I think would be the umbrella term.

Dan G, "dán díreach" is a style of Irish syllabic poetry.

Tá fáilte roimh chuile cheartú!
