Hello: I would like to be able to use the correct (Connemara)Irish for several basic phrases and would very much appreciate some help. I am assuming I can add substantives directly after the appropriate phrase--is that correct? 1) "I need..." [to use in a grocery store] 2) "May I have..." 3) "Where do I catch the bus to...?" 4) "What time does the bus come?" 5) "Do you have...?" 6) "Where is the (a)...?" 7) "What is the price?" or "How much is it?" 8) "I am staying at..." 9) "How far is it to...?" Thank you for any response. |

1) "I need..." Tá ...uaim. or Tá... ag teastáil uaim. If it's not really a need it's better to use Tá mé ag iarraidh ... I want... 2) "May I have..." This is very formal. If you want to be formal you could say, i)Excuse me but I would like... please. Gabh mo leithscéal ach ba mhaith liom...más é do thoil é. ii) The easiest way is (Milk),... please. (Bainne)...led' thoil. iii) A common form is I want... please. Tá mé ag iarraidh ... led' thoil 3) "Where do I get the bus to...?"Cá bhfaighim an bus go.? 4) "What time does the bus come?" Ag cén uair a dtagann an bus? 5) "Do you have...?" An bhfuil...'ad? (agat sounds like odd but hold the o sound of it longer) 6) "Where is the (a)...?" Cá bhfuil an...? For (a) leave out 'an' 7) "How much is it?" Cé mhéid atá air? 8)i) "I am staying at..." Tá mé ag fanacht ag... ('ag' is for public places like the hotel - ag an Ostán) 8)ii)"I am staying at..." Tá mé ag fanacht tigh ... ('tigh' is for someone's private residence like the French chez = at the house of) 9) "How far is it to...?" I'd usually start with, "Bhfuil sé i bhfad go..? "Is it far to...? Usually you get the answer with that but if not ask, Cé mhéid míle? or Cé mhéid ama? How many miles? or How much time? |

Thank you, Caitriona; that is just what I wanted. I especially appreciate your extensions to understanding the phrases. |

Tá fáilte romhat Evelyn agus tá an ceart agat Lars. Bhí mé ag smaoineamh i mBéarla ansin. |

I think "Cén uair a thagann an bus?" would be more correct. As far as I know, cén uair, cá huair and cathain are all followed by the direct relative. Tír Chonaill abú!
