Hello, I have found I thread in 2005 in which users state which other languages they speak or learn. I found this so interesting that I have decided to open a new one of this kind by now. I myself speak or learn the following languages: German: My native language. I love it because it is an expressive language. And there is great literature. Mid-Frankish: The original language of the region where I am living. I can speak several sentences and fully understand it. I would like to have good ability in it but there aren´t proper learning aids and outside of Köln nearly nobody still speak or wants to speak it. And the dialect of Köln is heavily influenced by (Standard-)German. Perhaps I will learn the dialect of Luxemburg in which there are learning aids. English: I have learnt it 6 years at school. I have good ability in it. English is simply useful, also in order to learn other languages for which there aren´t suitable learning aids in German, such as Irish. I think that English spoken by English people sounds much nicer than American English. French: I have learnt it 2 years in school, but I have fairly good ability in it. Like other Romance languages, I find it a fascinating languages. It also sounds nice. Irish: The first language I have started learning by self-tutoring. At the beginning you have to become used to the "strange" pronunciation. But it is a very interesting language. Furthermore I somehow feel obliged to the Irish folk. For there have been many Irish missionaries who have brought the Christian faith to what is now Germany. I am thankful to this. Ireland had a great Christian high culture. It is a shame that Irish declined so much later. Occitan: The language of the Troubadours. The Troubadours were a great culture in Europe, too. The area where it is the original language is in the south of France, approximately beginning in the Auvergne. It is a shame, too, as in the case of Irish, that it declined so much and has been oppressed by the French State since the French revolution. And until today, the French state oppresses Occitan. A shame! I can read much but the ability in sppeech has to be increased, yet. Latin: I love it because it is the language of a high culture, too. Many Fathers of the Church used Latin to write Christian scripts. I want to be able to read some of them. After having learnt it in school for 4 years, I am now brushing it up again and will continue getting more ability in it. Italian: Also great language which sounds nice. I have basic ability in it. I can better read it than speak it. Spanish: I have approximately the same ability in it than in Italian. But there are many languages I would like to learn, namely all Romance, Celtic and Germanic languages plus Basque. I have not so much time to learn languages as I would like. But I do NOT want to learn Arabic, Persian or Turkish. When hearing Arabic/Persian or of Arabic/Persian, I think of religious oppression and misleading as well as (religious) barbaric deeds for centuries until today. And Turkish is the language of the people who want to conquer Germany for Islam. The behavior of Turkish people in Germany is not attrackting to learn Turkish. Of course I do NOT like Islam and the Koran. Beannacht, Gruß, Jroß Alex |

Of course I do NOT like Islam and the Koran. Meas tú, bhfuil sé cliste a leithéide de rud a scríobh, a chara? Is cuma liom faoi PC, ach tá FÍOR-MHEAS agam ar an gcultúr 7 ar an reigiún 7 ar an Scriptúr atá tú a mhaslú. Peter |

Measaim go bhfuil se ceart a dúirt mé. Is an fhírinne shearbh atá sa rud a dúirt mé. Bhí fonn liom fáth an dhrogaill in aghaidh teanga arabach, turcach agus peirseach a rá dóibh. Deirim arís é: Dar liomsa is muintir bunaíoch é an muintir ioslamach. Feic cad tá ar siúl i muintireacha ioslamacha! Bhí fonn leat nach dtuigim na rudaí ar scríobh tú as Rúisis, is dócha. B'fhéidir nach maith leat mise anois. Ach is cuma liom é chomh maith is cuma liom go bpléascann balún in Afraic. Slán, Alex |

Ní dóigh liom go bhfuil go leor eolais agat le ráidht gur fuath leat an tIoslamachas. Tá 'n mhórchuid do na hIoslamaigh ceart go leor, is daoiní normálta iad, mar mé féin agus tú féin. Ná habair gur fuath leat na hIoslamaigh (an bhfuil aithne mhaith agat ar dhaoiní acu?): is fuath leat na hIslamists, agus tá duifear a’ domhain eadar Ioslamach (= Muslim) agus Islamist. D'úrt tú gur fuath leat an Córán. Ach ar léigh tú é? Ba chóir duit é a léamh sula n-inseochá do thuairim fá dtaobh dó, nár chóir? Agus níl baint ar bith eadar na teangthacha a luaigh tú thuas agus na hIslamists. An fuath leat achan duine a bhfuil Béarla aige? Má tá, marbhaigh thú féin! Bhuel, bhí Béarla aige Cromail agus aige daoiní mar sin a rinn dochar mór do dh’Éirinn. Agus an abróchá gur fuath leat achan Bhéarlóir as a shiocair sin? Ní cliste an rud gur fuath leat na hIoslamaigh go léir: is fuath leis a’ chuid is mó do na hIoslamaigh na hIslamists, agus níl cosúlacht ar bith eatarthu, dáiríre. Teangthacha don scoith iad an Araibis, a’ Pheirsis agus a’ Tuircis. Dá mbeadh eolas agat ar na cultúir agus ar na teangthacha sin, chan abróchá rudaí mar sin fá dtaobh daofa. Is fuath liom ha hIslamists ach is breá liom a’ Pheirsis agus cultúr na Sean-Iaráine. Agus dá bhfeicfeá áilleacht na mban ins an Iaráin, cha dtiocfadh leat ach tuiteam i ngrá leofa! Bhí aithne agam fadó ar bheirt chailín as an Iaráin, agus dá mb’fhéidir liom é aige’n am adaí, phósainn bean acu... Mná iontacha iad. Go glan díreach mar a bhíonn sé sa seó cainte “Mise mé féin [baineann]” ?? Níl a fhios ‘am, ní fhéachaim ar an TV Cén fáth ar scríobh sé é, cén bhaint atá aige sin le “Daltaí na Gaeilge”???? (ps. cuir thusa féin na glides anseo [mar gheall air nach bhféadtar glides na Gaeilge a chur ar fáil sa litrú Cyrillic]) B’fhéidir gur ciníochaí agus díograiseach [zealot] agus máineach fuilchíocrach a bheadh ionam féin, ach ní scríobhaim faoi seo ar fud an Idirlín... |

Knowing what wtf means is not a matter of course, is it? It's a failry new abbreviation and untill a couple of months ago I was unfamiliar with it too. That's nothing to laugh at. I was blissfully ignorant for a long time. |

i'm still blissfully ignorant on many counts. until recently, mar shampla: LOL. a former student of mine sent me a message a few weeks ago w/ LOL in it. i had to ask the meaning of that one. i did get the WTF, probably because of my crude upbringing. maybe we could collect a list of abbreviations, as gaeilge, like GRMA. Fist time I heard someone say the abbreviation WTF, I filled in the blanks. Of course, I'm an American and WTF is American slang so it's really no surprise. |

Personally, that is disgusting. You really have a disgusting attitude. You are worse than the right wing extremists in my country. Lets get something straight you excuse for a human being: Islam is overall a very peaceful religion. Yes, there are jihadists, but not all of them are. And you excuse, do you know what they have given us? Besides Persian and Arabic literature(some of the finest we have to offer), they gave us Astrology, Arabic Numerals, and have greatly improved Medicine in the Dark Ages. And you criticize them for being opressive? Yes, Turkey did the Armenian Genocide which they deny to this day(I am part Armenian and Jewish so I read a bit on both), but Germany isnt that innocent either. What comes to EVERYONES mind when the world Genocide is brought up? Oh thats right, Germany. Germany, historically, was a barbaric kingdom bent on war and with a massive dosage of a superiority complex. You really should reform your disgusting racist ways, because we dont want your racist generalizations on this forum about CULTURE and the beauty of DIFFERENT culture. -Alejo (Message edited by surfingnirvana on May 16, 2006) |
