There's a new Yahoo group for the Buntús Cainte series for Irish language beginners. We'll do one chapter a week. The group's aim will be to help beginners learn the Irish language but will also serve as a discussion forum for intermediate learners. If you're interested in joining here's the link. More details will follow. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/buntuscainte/ Le meas, Gobán |

Good luck with it! Here's a small "housewarming gift" for you: http://www.gaeilge.org/_images/BC123.jpg It's an image of all three Buntús Cainte books; you may use it on the group's home page if you like. This idea has been floating around Gaeilge-B for a few days; are you in on that discussion, or have you serendipitously come up with the same notion? http://www.gaeilge.org FRC - Fáilte Roimh Cheartúcháin

A Chionaodh Thanks for the gift! This new Yahoo group can use all the help it can get. Regarding your question above, no, I've never even been to Gaeilge-B. I was just thinking about the proliferation of new Irish-language groups and thought it would be a good time to start one on Buntús Cainte. A chairde, I started with Buntús Cainte myself, and find the format ideal - for each chapter there's a short vocabulary and practice section, then an often humorous dialog section where the words just learned are re-enforced. Buntús Cainte has been widely popular as a beginner's course for learning the Irish language. There are three separate books, each with their accompanying cassettes/CD's (I'll post information on where to obtain books, etc.). The group's purpose will be to serve as a forum for absolute beginners, but also give "advanced" beginners and intermediate learners the opportunity to discuss aspects of the Irish language in whatever detail they would like, including grammar, syntax, vocabulary and differences in dialects. After some time to give others a chance to find out about this group, we'll get started. If there are other sites, e.g., Gaeilge-B, etc., where there may be interest, please feel free to let the folks there know about this new Yahoo group. Le meas, Gobán |

Maybe your library has a copy of Buntús Cainte? If not, maybe they could purchase one? |

Scríobh Dan: went with Teach Yourself Irish instead (pulling hair out in clumps!) any groups for that? Hair Club for Men? There's a Teach Yourself Irish group, but it uses the original TYI, which teaches Munster Irish: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TYIMunster But I assume you bought the Ó Sé & Shiels version which was first published in the early 1990s (and has been rereleased recently with audio CDs instead of cassettes) -- that's a very different book from the original. http://www.gaeilge.org FRC - Fáilte Roimh Cheartúcháin
