so I was able to have a conversation today of about five minutes with my mother and I didn't need to use any english.

we discussed the situation with the West Virginia miners and what our plans were for the rest of the day. I was quite pleased to not have to revert to english for two reasons. Firstly, I've long been dissatisfied with my small vocabulary. This shows that I'm getting better. Secondly, I've been working to teach my mother as much as I could for years. While she spoke in english (that much Irish she doesn't yet have), she understood my Irish and I didn't need to explain anything in english.

Studying a language in a fair degree of isolation for a long time can be very frustrating...moments like this give a sense of satisfaction.

just wanted to share =)

A start is as good as a rest! (says a tired cramping exam student)
