I found you by accident when looking up references to the National Anthem. I was trying to find a literal translation - I knew enough to know that 'báis nó saoil'
does not mean 'woe or weal' ... I always took it to mean "death or life", literally, but figuratively "whether I live or die" ....

thanks - and please correct me with any and every mistake. I have never spoken or used Irish outside of the classroom but I was blessed enough to have two great teachers (great lovers of the language) when coming up through school and I have always tried to hang on to my cúpla focail !

Bais no saoil does not mean woe or weal it's true. But the previous line in both the Irish and English ends with "Bearna baoill" and the words are used to make the rhyme.
