Attempted translation: "Dear friends, I bought a 40GB iPod [there?] yesterday on the Internet, I am impatient, but [how is it? isn't everyone?]. Do any of you [have a strong?] recommendation, or condemnation for [what we shoild pay]?" If my translation is anywhere close to reality, are you asking what the going price is? Nil aon lascaine. [There are no discounts... Apple stuff is pretty much list price everywhere.] Ach, ta tu abalta [But you are able ... to buy them at Apple's refurbished store on the web, at least in the US you can.] [Gabh mo leithsceal for the lack of fadas--it's just way too time consuming on Windows. Sa bhaile ar mo Mac, ta se really easy to insert fadas.] |

you also should have a drop down menu to switch to a us keyboard (or any other, for that matter.) in os x you can go to system preferences and select international : input method to approve the keyboards you want in the drop down menu...in old os's it's in control panels:keyboards unicode is one of your options in the os x keyboards...as well as (in os x.3) Irish:extended which will give you the séimhiú dot with opt+w+[letter] happy accenting |

Sa?ain (Previous line is test of the séimhiú dot with opt+w,[letter] using Irish Extended keyboard in OS X Tiger) Ah, I imagine we'd have to change the language for the HTML page for it to work. It looks fine when entered, but doesn't post correctly. It's pretty inconsistent, too. It doesn't work in Word X. In Apple's "Pages" application, it inserts a Helvetica font even if you're using a font (such as Ceannanas) that supports those characters. |

Just in case anyone hasn't tried this, here's the easy way to do fadas in Windows... At least on XP, I don't know if this works on other Windows versions... 1. go into the control panel 2. click "date, time, language, regional options." 3. click "regional and language options" 4. choose the tab that says "languages" 5. click the "details" button. 6. click "add" 7. check the box that says "Keyboard layout / IME". Choose "Irish". Don't bother to change the "Input Language" in the dropbox, although you might want to do that later. 8. click OK until you are out of the control panel. Now you should have the choice between whatever you usually type in, and a keyboard set up for Irish. 9. Look at the bar at the bottom, on the right, there should either be a little icon that is a keyboard, click it and look for "Irish." Choose it. 10. Now you should be able to get fadas. ctrl + alt + a = á ctrl + alt + o = ó ctrl + alt + u = ú ctrl + alt + shift + a = Á ctrl + alt + shift + o = Ó ctrl + alt + shift + u = Ú Oh, and you have to choose the input language for each window... If your default language/keyboard style is English, you have to choose Irish (down on the task bar, at the lower right) for each window. I found it a bit frustrating at first, because I kept forgetting. Personally, I actually set my keyboard to "United States - International". That gives all the characters I need for Swedish, Irish and German (and English), but I don't have to switch back and forth. åüóíÉÅÁáÁäöóíúüéåäæ©ñµðßÇç Cheers Aaron (Message edited by aaron on June 20, 2005) |

Hey, that's cool Aaron. Thanks. It works similarly in Windows 2000: 1. Start > Settings > Control Panel > Regional Options 2. Click the "Input Locales" tab 3. Click the Add... button. Leave the Input locale alone, but set the Keyboard Layout/IME to "Irish". Click OK. 4. Down below, you can set hot keys for switching between locales, and make sure the checkbox for "Enable indicator on taskbar" is selected. Click OK. 5. You'll see a big, ugly "EN" in your Start bar's tray (on the right). Click it to change languages. Everything else is as Aaron describes. Oh, that's much nicer! Maybe Aaron's post should be a FAQ on this site? |

Or you could simply click on the 'help with fadas' at the bottom of the page here and you'll geet a pop-up telling you how to do them on windows or mac. No dot seimhiús though. |

Yes, a Mhaidhc, but Aaron's setup allows you to use Ctrl+Alt+[letter] which is a lot more mnemonic than Alt+0xxx! Maybe pulling this thread (well, everything except the question about the iPod ;-) ) into a new page, and linking to it from the "Help with Fadas" page would be good. (I know, I know. A million ideas and no time to implement them all.) |

quote:(I know, I know. A million ideas and no time to implement them all.) But a good idea nonetheless. I'll add a link to this discussion and the several others that have covered this topic area to the "Help with Fadas" and "help!" pages this weekend. Thanks, Caoimhín Tír gan teanga, tír gan anam.
