Hello,

I am trying to gather as much information as possible regarding the various waves of migration from Donegal to Glenhest, Newport, Achill and the Ballycroy area of Erris (1654, 1691 etc.) in County Mayo.

I have already found references to these movements in studies on the mixed Ulster/Mayo dialects that developed in these areas and was still in evidence in the 1940s. Would anyone be able to suggest publications that cover this issue, even if only briefly?

So far, I have already found useful information in the following publications:
1. P Knight, 1836, "Erris in the Irish Highlands"
2. Thomas F. O'Rahilly, "Irish dialects past and present, with chapters on Scottish and Manx"
3. Éamonn Mhac an Fhailigh, "The Irish of Erris, Co. Mayo: a phonemic study"
4. W Betham, "Irish Antiquities Researches".

I'd be grateful for any additional suggestions. The publications can be in any language - I'll find a way.

Best Regards

Chaith Sliocht Choinn Uí Dhomhnaill http://www.donegaltown.ie/odonnell/ cúpla céad bliain ag Larkfield Ho. i gCo. Liatroma ar an mbealach go hiarthar Mhaigh Eo.
Bean den sliocht sin is ea Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, iarchraoltóir RTÉ, atá ag cur fúithi i Maigh Chuilinnn, Co. na Gaillimhe.

One line from Conn Ó Domhnaill spent some 200 yrs. along the way in Co. Leitrim before getting to west Mayo, a descendant being Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill of Maigh Chuilinn Co. Galway. A sister of the chief, she may be able to help you.

And, of course, Máirtín Mac Donnchadha — — of Raidió na Gaeltachta ("I gCeartlár na nDaoine" and "Parlaimint Mhaigh Eo") knows plenty of sources of such information and would probably be glad to help.
