A chairde, Fuair me an alt seo sa Belfast Telegraph inniu. A thiarcais! Slan tamall, Paul Trilingual town signs stir up row 26 August 2003 A ROW has erupted over plans to introduce the first trilingual signs in Northern Ireland. Down Council is considering erecting signs at the entrance to towns and villages in the district in three languages - English, Irish, and Ulster-Scots. But the DUP has warned that any attempt to erect signs featuring the Irish language is likely to be vandalised in mainly unionist areas like Clough, Ballynahinch and Killyleagh. The council's Cultural Issues group recommends that residents should be consulted on the proposal. The chairman of the group, SDLP councillor Carmel O'Boyle said: "We want to reflect all cultures through our signage and that signage must be uniform throughout the district." However, DUP councillor Jim Wells warned unionists will oppose the plan and he said he would not be surprised if signs are vandalised. He claimed it is a waste of ratepayers' money. |
