Athair which is pronounced, roughly, "Ah - ar" in the Cois Fhairrage dialect. I think that the Standard Irish would be "Ah-hir". Get some native, or at least, more scholarly input before you commit this to anything permanent. Le meas, James |

It's to my memory that the first 'A' is pronounced like the 'a' in the English word "hat". (A-er) i gCois Fhairrge. But I would go with James' second of (A-hir ; same first vowel). It's a much more common pronunciation. Le meas, Maidhc. |

A Mhaidhc, You may very well be correct on the pronunciation. I'll check my tapes to be certain. That is one of the really difficult aspects of self-teaching. I have no way of checking my pronunciation against a living, breathing gaeilgoir. I think your memory is better than mine on this one! Le meas, James |
