Is it correct to say either of the following for " I was with my friend":

Bhí mé le mo chara or Bhí mé le cara dom

I read somewhere that the first one was incorrect but I am not sure why it would be. Any help clearing this up would be appreciated.

Bhí mé le mo chara. -- Níl aon fhadhb ansin, go bhfios domsa.

Bhí mé le cara liom. = I was with a friend of mine.

an seanchas is fearr."

Tá daoine ann a mbíonn col acu le le, toisc gur féidir bríonna faoi léith a bhaint as.

Ach is dóigh liom gur saoithíneacht atá ann.

i. Tá debhrí san abairt "Bhí mé ag fanacht leis an mbus" - d'fheadfá bheith ag cuir in iúl nach raibh tú chun an bus a fhagáil!

"A friend of mine" can be translated in many ways:

- cara liom
- cara dom
- cara agam
- cara de mo chuid

If you say "mo chara", it means either that you've already mentioned it before so we know who he is, or that you've got only one friend :-)

So how would you say it if you just wanted to say my friend, not a friend of mine?

"mo chara".

Actually when you are talking to him, you'd say "a chara !" (o, friend). And when you're talking about him, "mo chara".
