Immersion Course in The Irish Language

Friday, February 17th through Sunday, February 19th,  2017

Marist Brothers Retreat Center
1455 Broadway
Route 9W, Esopus, NY
845-384-6620

Gaeltacht Weekends were established in 1981 to provide a setting where students can learn and practice the Irish Language in an atmosphere where Irish is the “First” language.  The name Gaeltacht refers to the regions in Ireland where Irish is the predominant language.

Though most participants have been studying for longer periods of time, those with little or no prior knowledge are also welcome.

The only requirements are a desire to learn, a commitment to use whatever Irish you do have, and a willingness to comply with the rule:  Irish will be spoken by all, at all times, to the best of one’s ability.  Language classes will be held and are mandatory.

Workshops in Irish music, singing and céilí dancing will also be offered. Bring your musical instruments. There will be a céilí Saturday night.

You are encouraged to bring a tape recorder, pens, pencils, notebook, etc.

SCHOLARSHIP UPDATE

This is the 20th year that Daltaí na Gaeilge is offering scholarships to both students and teachers to assist them in their Irish Language studies in Ireland as well as the States. Through the generosity of the Tierney family, and in memory of their son, Daltaí is honored to award the "Firefighter John Patrick Tierney Scholarship" for a teacher to study in Ireland. Oideas Gael, the language and cultural school located in the Donegal Gaeltacht, will supplement this special Scholarship with Free Tuition, Room and Board to their weeklong Teachers' program.  We thank the Tierney family for their generosity, and Oideas Gael for their recognition and continued support in our shared mission of promoting an Ghaeilge. Also, the Student or Teacher who wins our scholarship to attend the Summer Immersion Week during August 2017 in Esopus, NY will receive Tuition, Room and Board.

The deadline for receipt of all scholarship applications is May 1, 2017.
