Watch out Cló Iar-Chonnachta here comes Daltaí na Gaeilge!

Súil Siar

Well, maybe CIC isn’t exactly quaking in its boots, but Daltaí has just published its first book. You’ll forgive us I’m sure but for the moment we bursting with pride over our accomplishment.

The book is a collection of 32 of the more than 300 articles written by Barry Donovan for the Irish Echo chosen by Barry himself, and translated and edited by his friends, Hilary Sweeney and Eileen Zurell.

An Lucht Éisteachta

To start the evening, we were treated to some very special music by Barry’s old friends, Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin and James Keane.

Éamon Ó Cuív        This year’s lecture was to be very special as Dr. Joe Lee had very thoughtfully arranged for Éamon Ó Cuív, the Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, to be the main speaker and to launch the book.

Mr. Ó Cuív spoke to us about the future of the Irish Language in the 21st Century and at one point paraphrased Mark Twain saying “Rumours of the demise of the Irish language have been vastly exaggerated.”

Ethel agus an tAire

After Mr. Ó Cuív's talk, Eileen Zurell, Hilary Sweeney and Liam Guidry spoke briefly about Barry’s influence on Daltaí both professionally and personally. Mr. Ó Cuív then launched the book and was presented with a copy of it by Ethel Brogan, Daltaí’s founder.

It was a wonderful evening remembering our dear friend and teacher and the warmth and happiness in that room on Thursday was a reflection of the depth of our affection and respect for Barry.

More than 100 copies of the book were sold on the spot.  Check it out:  http://www.daltai.com/siopa/siopa.html

1st Prize – Worldwide Competition (Global Gaeilge)

Daltaí na Gaeilge was privileged to win first prize in the 2007 Worldwide Competition (Comórtas Domhanda - Global Gaeilge) which was sponsored by Glór na nGael.  This honor was awarded in recognition of the work done by Daltaí na Gaeilge on behalf of the Irish language for almost 30 years now.  The judges considered such things as the language immersion events, the classes, the website, the publicity campaigns, and every other means employed by Daltaí over the years “to teach and promote the Irish language” here in North America.  Our President, Ethel Brogan, requested that Pádraig Mullen and Liam Guidry go to Ireland as her representatives to accept the award.  The ceremony was held on Saturday the 29th  of March 2008 in Ennis, County Clare.

An Chéad Duais

And here is an article by Mary McShane about our Irish Week:

ESOPUS – 26 August – 1 September 2007

Taobh Amuigh san Aimsir Álainn

Well . . . another summer has passed, and another Irish week as well.  All of the attendees had a lot of fun, as usual:  tasty food, friendly company and encouragement, plus a lot of learning -  they were all to be experienced throughout the Irish week in Esopus this year.  There were four Irish classes meeting three times each day and more than 80 students attendees altogether.

   Páistí le Stiobhárd

And the children . . . !  We’ve never had that many children with us before – almost 20 boys and girls, attending our pre-school and “complete beginners” classes with our Ethel in charge of them.  As they say:  a good start is half the work!

Bhí beagnach fiche páistí linn

Of course, we had the best teachers again throughout the week:  Eibhlín Zurell, Pádraigín Collum, Rath deHoust, Walter Stock, Maitiú Tully, Séamus McCabe, and Donncha Ó Cuinn on the half day (Wednesday afternoon).

Matiú Tully agus a Fhoireann

Also, we had a clever young lady with us this yearCaitríona Ní Chléircín as the ard-rang teacher:  Caitríona Ní Chléiricín,  from County Monaghan.  Caitríona is a student herself, presently attending University College in Dublin, and teaching adults with Bord na Gaeilge.  This was her first visit to America but we hope she will be back with us again.

Among the other highpoints of the week were:

Rang Ceoil le Susan Ott     -- music classes every day:  Gobnait and Susan, the teachers, were excellent, and there was a self-taught group practicing the tin whistle

-- a very interesting lecture about mysteries of the Welsh language, by Walter Stock

Noel Cotter       -- a wonderful show about his long journey on the Appalachian Trail (almost 2,200 miles altogether, from Georgia to Maine), by Noel Cotter

-- a murder (sort of!), with clues to be solved by the participants – “Who did it?”

-- a sports day in the middle of the week, with Stiobhárd and Liam as directors.  We played a game “Truth or Dare”, with four teams competing against each other.  Before the end of the game, there were a few cream pies thrown in a few faces . . . (!)

Bhí Lá Spóirt Againn i Lár na Seachtaine

Na Damhsóirí is Fearr    -- dance workshops were held every night in the gym with Noel Cotter – good practice before the céilí on Friday night

--  a collection of different films, in Irish and in English, were available to provide a rest after the long days learning Irish!

-- and a big céilí at the end of the week, with lots of fun and “party pieces” from every group!

Na Páistí

Throughout the week, our thoughts and our hearts were with our friends who were not present this year – especially with Seán Tierney.  May God keep you all, until we see each other again.

And a thousand thanks again to Ethel and her team for another wonderful week.
