Hi all,

Could anyone help me with the following translation?  “Like mother, like daughter”.  I am looking this up for my mother who wants to get her 1st tattoo.  Her mom is from Belfast (I don’t know if that matters as far as dialect) and want to make sure I accurately translate it.

I was told to check this forum for more expert help.  So far people have suggested “Is dual máthar duit” (“You are like your mother”) and “Is fíoriníon le do mháthair thú” (“You are the daugther of your mother”) but it’s still not quite what we were looking for.

Thanks!!!!

Sorry this is in English :(

Cosúil le máthair, cosúil le hiníon.

Cosúil le máthair, cosúil le hiníon.

This is a word(s)-for-word(s)  translation which, I’m afraid , doesn’t “work”  at all at all. I suggest you revisit your original query on the other Daltai forum and ask again. There are one or two good versions there.

Agus cén fáth nár cheart aistriúchán ” focal ar fhocal ” a úsáid ?

Cinnte, is féidir é a úsáid anois is aríst, ach ní chiallaíonn “cosúil le máthair, cosúil le hiníon” tada…

Is í an chiall a bhainimse as an abairt seo agatsa go bhfuil duine eile ann atá cosúil leis an máthair agus leis an iníon ag an am céanna, seachas go bhfuil “an iníon cosúil lena máthair”.

Ciallaíonn “cosúil” “resembling in appearance”.

Mar sin, ní thuigfeadh an tiontú focal ar fhocal ach daoine go raibh an bunleagan Béarla acu! Sin an toisc nach n-oibríonn tiontú focal ar fhocal.

Ach nach bhfuil an fhadhb chéanna ann leis an leagan Béarla ?  Níl aon chiall litriúil i mBéarla leis na focail ” like mother, like daughter “.  Iarradh orainn frása gan chiall a aistriú.  Má chuireann tú seafóid isteach, faigheann tú seafóid amach.

Má fhéachann tú ar an snáithe ar an dtaobh eile chífidh tú gur fhiosraigh mé an chéill a bhí ón duine a chuir an cheist.
