I’m looking to translate one of my favorite sayings, a variation on Stein’s Law which goes: “something that cannot go on forever…won’t”

I’ve come up with, “Rud nach féidir a mhaireachtáil go deo, ní mhaireann”

I’m wondering if there is a better way to say this while still preserving the spirit and attitude of the original.  I understand it’s a tricky translation, as the thing that makes the original phrase memorable hinges on a turn of the words that won’t be possible in Irish.

An rud nach féidir leis maireachtáil go deo, ní mhairfidh sé.

Ulster: An rud nach dtig leis mairstint go deo, cha mhaireann sé.

Níl aon rud buan

An rud nach féidir a bheith buan, ní bheidh.

Ceann deas é sin Jeaicín cinnte, ach meas tú an bhfuil an brí ceanna leis? Céim seachas buaine atá i gceist leis.

Tá an ceart agat, a Aonghuis.  Níl ann ach go mbaineann an sean-rá agamsa le buaine agus neamhbhuaine / díomuaine.  Nílim á rá gur ionann é agus “something that cannot go on forever…won’t”

go raibh maith agaibh.  Of the bunch, I’m liking

An rud nach féidir a bheith buan go deo, ní bheidh,

But I’m wondering if I went wrong in trying to translate “go on” as “persist.”  Cad a smaoinigh sibh ar, “An rud nach féidir a lean go deo, ní leanfaidh.”?

De réir mo thuisceana, is é a bhí i gceist ag Stein ná “ní gá bacadh le treochta geilleagair áirithe ná beirt ar leith a chur i bhfeidhm le déanamh réidh leo, mar stopfaidh siad as a stuaim féin”.

Mar sin, déarfainn b’fhéidir:

Rud nach atá buan, stopfaidh sé (rachfaidh sé in éag) as a stuaim féin.

Yes, but with the spin on it that I have, it can be applied to careers stretched beyond the “Peter Principle,” relationships on the rocks, unsustainable economic practices, etc, etc.  That was why I was leaning toward the “continue” translation.

Thuig mé an méid sin. smile Séard a bhí uaim ná béim a chur ar “... will stop OF ITS OWN ACCORD”, rud a cheap mé nach raibh soiléir sna haistriúcháin.
