Every November people travel to the Greater Philadelphia area to learn and speak Irish at the Irish Language Immersion Weekend sponsored by Daltaí na Gaeilge (Students of the Irish Language). This program is one of the largest Immersion Weekends held in North America, and has always attracted a large group of attendees whose abilities range from "no Irish at all" to "native Irish speakers". The atmosphere at the November Weekend is hardly that of somber, solitary students, with their noses buried in their books, slogging through rules of grammar. On the contrary, the prevailing mood is one of relaxation, friendliness and fun.

Morning and afternoon classes are taught by instructors from all walks of life, each bringing their own unique experiences to the classroom setting. Classes are available from beginner to advanced levels. Following the day classes, lectures are offered on various topics of Irish interest such as history, folklore and traditional music. There are also workshops in tin whistle, singing and céilí dancing which are open to all.

On Saturday afternoon Mass is offered (in Irish, of course) for those who wish to attend, which is followed by an evening of entertainment. The festivities begin with a 'seisiún' where many of the participants display their talents in music, recitation, poetry and singing. After the seisiún is a céilí featuring traditional Irish music and dancing.

One of the highlights of the céilí is the "Costume Competition". Everyone is invited to wear a costume or mask, but participation is totally optional. It is all presented in good fun for the sake of the 'craic' (sport, good times). Prizes are awarded in several categories. Féach ar an alt Ros agus Dealg le Barra Ó Donnabháin.

The November Gaeltacht Weekend is best summarized as a thoroughly educational and enjoyable gathering of people with one common goal: The preservation and advancement of the Irish language and culture.

The 2019 November Immersion Weekend will be held November 8th to the 10th in Jamison, PA. The Official Announcement and Registration Form for this event will be posted at the Daltaí Shop 6 to 8 weeks before the scheduled date.

For many years, Daltaí na Gaeilge has offered a Summer Immersion Week. These were begun by our founder, the late Ethel Brogan, to give Gaeilgeorí a chance not only for classes but to speak Irish with others and to join in social activities.

Accommodations are dormitory style and comfortable. Meals are served cafeteria style. The atmosphere is casual and friendly. One afternoon is a "free” half-day when you can explore the surrounding area or just relax on the grounds. Weather permitting, the pool is open daily so pack your swimsuit.

No meals are served on Sunday so you may want to grab a bite before checking in or brown-bag it. At check-in, you will receive a packet with the week's schedule and other information. You will have time to find your dorm and settle in before the Cruinniú where you will meet your teachers and fellow learners.

Classes begin early Monday morning and there are classes for students at the beginner, intermediate and advanced levels as well as separate classes for children. The schedule may seem daunting, but there is ample time for study, rest and recreation. You'll hear the "lilt of Irish laughter" often during your stay. Many of the attendees are repeat visitors who find great enjoyment here. So come and "bain sult as". You'll be glad you did.

The 2018 Summer Week Immersion Program will be held August 25th to August 31st in Esopus, New York. The Official Announcement and Registration Form for this event will be posted 6 to 8 weeks before the scheduled date in the Daltaí shop.

And if you have a moment please take a look at the short video below that Melissa Murray put together. Melissa won a Daltaí Scholarship in 2011 and she attended our Summer Immersion Week in Esopus. Here is her clever and entertaining summary of her experience.

Satharn na nGael is a day of immersion in the Irish Language, designed to give newcomers a taste of the Irish language, as well as a sampling of Irish music, poetry, customs and folklore. Although about a third of the attendees are brand new to the language, intermediate and advanced classes are offered as well, with plenty of time for the "craic" in between.

The event is held every year in late Spring in the Greater Philadelphia area in association with the Commodore Barry Arts and Cultural Center. Language classes are held in the morning and afternoon, interspersed with informal workshops. In past years, sessions have been held in tin whistle, harp, the pipes and even Irish language on the Internet. An introductory class in céilí dancing is also offered and is a great way to work off tension and relieve stress.

A seisiún is held after dinner, and students have the opportunity to present their party pieces: a song, a poem or even a new dance step learned during the day. The secluded setting for the event allows for complete immersion in the language.

The informal tone of the day is a gentle introduction to the language, which perhaps may whet one's appetite for more adventurous forays, such as formal instruction or an Immersion Weekend. Even if you are just planning a trip to Ireland, the day can help you to learn a "cúpla focal" (a few words) to use on your way.

Lunch and dinner are also included in the fee for the day which is about $45. It is a full day of activity, Irish style, and a chance to network with others in the area who wish to preserve the language. The event is sponsored by Daltaí na Gaeilge (Students of the Irish Language) and is just one of the programs that they host throughout the year. It offers the perfect blend of study and entertainment for anyone interested in Ireland's language and culture.

The 2019 Satharn na nGael is scheduled for June 1st at the Commodore Barry Arts and Cultural Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The Official Announcement and Registration Form for this event will be posted in the Daltaí Shop 6 to 8 weeks before the scheduled date

Daltaí na Gaeilge (Students of the Irish Language) offers a variety of programs throughout the year to help students learn and use the Irish language. Each program is different, but the immersion weekends held each February and May are very similar to one another. These programs are held at the Marist Center in a beautifully wooded location in Esopus, New York.

Accommodations at the Marist Center are dormitory style - with both single beds and bunkbeds. Meals are served cafeteria style. If you spent summers at camp, you will know what to expect. Bring your own sheets, towels, toiletries, etc. A sleeping bag or extra blanket can be handy if the weather turns cold. Jeans, sweats, etc. are the uniform of the day with something a little nicer for the céilí (Irish music and dancing) on Saturday evening.

Most people bring snacks to share - cake, cookies, soda bread, fruit, cheese and crackers are always welcome. Moderate use of alcohol is permitted at evening gatherings, so bring along your favorite 'deoch'. Refrigeration is also available.

Both weekends offer a special feature - "the one-on-one" - where students are paired with teachers or other fluent speakers for a short time to walk the grounds conversing 'as Gaeilge' as much as possible. You get the chance to practice your conversation skills, ask some burning questions and get to know another Gaeilgeoir.

Friday night's schedule begins with a crash phrase course for beginners, a song workshop and a short meeting where students and teachers are introduced. After that you are free to sit around and chat with others, raid the snack table, have a "cuppa" or just hang out.

Saturday morning comes all too early, so it's up for breakfast and then on to class. You will need pens, a notebook and of course your 'foclóir' (dictionary). A small tape recorder is also useful.

The classes are small and informal, lasting about an hour and a half to two hours. There are two classes on Saturday and one on Sunday morning. There are also lectures as well as workshops in music, dancing, etc. during the day on Saturday.

On Saturday evening, mass is said in Irish for those who wish to attend. Dinner follows and then a social evening, starting with a 'seisiún' where fellow students sing, dance play music, recite, etc. Polish up your "party piece" and join in. After this, a céilí is held where you can put to use the steps you learned during the afternoon's Irish dance workshop. The céilí ends at midnight with the "Grand March", but stick around for the 'craic' that follows.

Sunday morning - breakfast, class, the 'crinniú', lunch and then it's "back again to stern reality". Another weekend is over. Where did the time go? And when is the next one?

The 2019 May Immersion Weekend will be held May 17th to 19th in Esopus, New York. The Official Announcement and Registration Form for this event will be posted in the Daltaí SHOP as soon as the registration period opens (usually 6 to 8 weeks before the scheduled date).

These cultural treasures are incredibly rare to find anywhere outside of Ireland. We aim to sustain a vibrant community for these and other Irish cultural arts (including storytelling, poetry, and decorative arts) throughout the Pacific Northwest.

A chara,

Reachtáil Daltaí na Gaeilge , eagraíocht a bhfuil dul chun cinn na Gaeilge i Meiriceá mar chúram aici, deireadh seachtaine le haghaidh daoine atá in ann Gaeilge a labhairt, 27 - 29 Márta, 1998. Tionóladh an Deireadh Seachtaine i Long Beach Island, New Jersey, áit atá timpeall céad míle ó dheas ó Chathair Nua-Eabhrac, ar chósta an Atlantaigh Mhóir.

Agus tháinig na sluaite. Ghlac os cionn trí fichid duine páirt in imeachtaí an deireadh seachtaine agus níor labhraíodh ach Gaeilge ar feadh an ama uilig, ó Aoine go Domhnach.

Meiriceánaigh ba mhó a bhí ann, ach bhí roinnt mhaith ann, freisin, a rugadh in Éirinn. Casadh bean orm as Contae an Chláir, bean eile as Baile Átha Cliath agus, ar ndóigh, bhí Ethel Brogan ann, arb as Contae Ard Mhacha ó cheart í, Sóisear Mac Cionnaith as Doire agus Barra Ó Donnabháin as Corcaigh. Bhí cainteoirí dúchais ann, freisin, ina measc an tAthair Stiofán Ó Donchú as Indreabhán agus Pádraig Mac a'Ghoill as Ard a' Rátha.

Bhí ceardlanna, seimineáir agus díospóireachtaí ann. Ceann de na ceisteanna a pléadh ab ea "An bhfuil an tUachtarán Clinton ciontach?" Agus Walter Stock, fear atá ag múineadh na Gaeilge i Nua-Eabhrac le cúig bliana déag is fiche, thug sé an lucht éisteachta leis ar thuras draíochta go Tír na nÓg. Thug mé féin léacht ar "Béaloideas an Chreidimh in Éirinn agus in Albain Nua".

Bhí Aifreann Gaeilge ann, freisin, a léigh an tAthair Ó Donchú, tráthnóna Dé Sathairn, agus thug sé seanmóir uaidh i nGaeilge bhreá ar an Soiscéal "An té atá saor ó pheaca, caitheadh sé an chéad chloch".

Oíche Dé Sathairn, bhí dinnéar mór agus cóisir ann. Níl a fhios beo ná beirthí cén spraoi a bhí ann. Tháinig cuid de na daoine isteach agus iad gléasta go fiú na mbróg, mar ó Dhia, ar na mná, láimhíní fada ar chuid acu suas go dtína gcuid uillineacha agus cleití ina gcuid hataí!

Dheamhan a leithéid de spórt (nó a leithéid d'éadaí) a chonacthas ó tionóladh Aonach an Domhain i Siceagéo i 1893. Tar éis an tsuipéir, bhí neart amhránaíochta agus aithriseoireachta agus chuile rud ó thus go deireadh i nGaeilge bhinn bhlasta.

Mar a dúradh thuas, ní deireadh seachtaine le haghaidh tosaitheoirí a bhí sa tionól seo ach ceann le haghaidh daoine a bhí sásta gan ach Gaeilge a labhairt. Is iontach an obair atá déanta ag Daltaí na Gaeilge agus go mór mór ag Liam Guidry, Sóisear Mac Cionnaith agus Ethel Brogan. Comhghairdeas do Daltaí na Gaeilge agus go maire siad i bhfad!

Socraíonn Daltaí na Gaeilge ceardlann gach Feabhra ar son Múinteoirí na Gaeilge. Tosaíonn an cheardlann tráthnóna Dé Domhnaigh agus leanann sí go dtí am lóin Dé Luain.

Go hiondúil, tugtar cuireadh do Oide Éireannach an cheardlann a stiúradh. Míníonn siad na modhanna múinteora is déanaí. Le blianta beag anuas b'iad na ceardlanna a rinne Liam Ó Cuinneagáin, Éamonn Ó Donaill agus Bearnadine Nic Ghiolla Phádraig ná: "An Duine Fásta Mar Foghlaimeoir", "Ag Múineadh Trí Ghníomh (amhráin, rincí, srl)", agus an cúrsa nua "Abair Leat".

Glacann na múinteoirí Dhaltaí na Gaeilge idir páirt an mhúinteora agus páirt na mic léinn. Déanann siadsan cleachtadh faoin gcomhairle an Oide Múinte. Tugtar seans dona múinteoirí feabhas a chur ar scileanna an mhúinteora, rud nach féidir a dhéanamh mura mbíonn múinteoirí eile sa chomhluadar.

Bíonn an obair dáirire ach bíonn an-spraoi againn. San oíche bíonn comhrá, cleachtadh agus craic. Is é an t-am a fhásann cairdeas idir na múinteoirí agus bíonn seans eolas a roinnt agus ceisteanna a chur ar mhúinteoirí a bhfuil taithí acu a bheith ag teagasc ag leibhéal éagsúla - bun rang, meán rang nó ard rang.

Beidh Ceardlann na Múinteoirí 2019 ar 17ú - 18ú Feabhra in Esopus, Nua-Eabhrac. Tá an Fógra Oifigiúil agus an Fhoirm Chláraithe le fáil i SIOPA DHALTAÍ
