Cad é an focal is mó aithne ar fud an domhain a thosaigh i nGaeilge?

"An seanchas gearr,
an seanchas is fearr."

Ní hea. Ach tá baint ag an bhfocal sin leis an bhfocal atá ar intinn agam!

"An seanchas gearr,
an seanchas is fearr."

Tá, gan dabht. Agus ceann -- nó dhó -- eile a thaistil i bhfad?

Bhuel, tá "smithereens" agus "galore" agus cúpla ceann eile sa Bhéarla, ach ní hionann focal a bheith sa Bhéarla agus é a bheith ar eolas go hidirnáisiúnta, dár ndóigh.

Cad mar gheall ar "clan"? An bhfuil sé in úsáid i do theanga féin? Tá sé feicthe agam i bhFraincis, i Spáinnis, agus i nGearmáinis.

an seanchas is fearr."

Tá an ceart agat! Focal é seo a bhí ar eolas agam sula raibh Béarla nó Gaeilge agam.

Feictear dom go bhfuil brí níos speisialaithe ag an fhocal seo sna teangacha eile ná mar atá sa Ghaeilge. Sa tSeicis, nuair a deirtear i leith grúpa daoine gur "klan" atá iontu, tá brí chomhcheilgeach leis. Tugann sé le fios gur ar thóir a leasa féin atá an grúpa sin beag beann ar dhaoine eile. Ní gá go mbeadh caidreamh clainne eatarthu ar chor ar bith. Tá mé tar éis é seo a sheiceáil i roinnt foclóirí Seicise agus sin é go díreach an sainmhíniú a thugtar. Shamhlóinn go bhfuil an scéal mar a chéanna i dteangacha eile.

Tá "hooligan" ann leis, ach níl a fhios againn cé acu gan amhras is é sin focal Gaelach.

Tá "slogan" in úsáid i níos mó ná dosaen teangacha, lena n-áirítear Spáinnis (eslogan, Ungáiris (szlogen), agus Cóiréis (슬로건).

Ach cén focal Gaeilge atá taobh thiar de?

Tá "bard" le fáil i bhFraincis ("barde") agus i Spáinnis ("bardo"). Níl a fhios agam faoi na teangacha eile.

Agus céard faoi "carrageen(an)"? Is dóigh liom go nglactar le "carrageen / carragheen / Karrageen / etc." mar ainm an fheamainne sin ar fud an domhain.

Tuigim do cheist a Ghaeil, ach is focal eile é an t-ainm 'Oscar' thar lear, d'ainneoin an os+car> Oscar seo againne féin a bheith ar aon litriú leis. Is ionann an t-'os-' acusan agus 'dia'. Is ionann an t'Oscar' acusan agus ainm an bháid san iarsmalainn, an 'Asgard'!

Tá i bhfad níos mó d'obair Calvert Watkins ar fáil sa leabhar 'Indo-European Roots' ná mar atá le fáil anseo ar an idirlíon: http://www.bartleby.com/61/s191.html

Is dóigh liom go bhfuil abairt iomlán ann, "whiskey galore" ~ "uisce [beatha] go leor" atá intuigthe ar fud dhomhan an Bhéarla. An mbeadh daoine eile, Rúisigh nó Seapánaigh cuir i gcás, in ann é a thuiscint?

Tá an focal 'whiskey' idirnáisiúnta go leor, ach ní dóigh liom gurbh amhlaidh leis an fhocal 'galore'. Ní dóigh liom go dtuigfeadh duine gan Béarla é.
