Tá cara liom tar éis ceist shuimiúil a ardú liom. Cén fhuaim a dhéanann cait, agus daoine ag déanamh aithrise orthu as Gaeilge? Tá meowmiaow sa Bhéarla, mnau sa tSeicis, ... Cad é an focal Gaeilge? Ní bhfuair mé an t-eolas seo in aon fhoclóir.

Seans go bhfuil muintir na Gaeltachta faoi thionchar an Bhéarla chomh mór sin inniu go ndeir siad meow an Bhéarla, freisin. Más amhlaidh atá, cad a deirtí fadó?

Michal

Tá "míabh" nó rud cosúil leis feicthe agam. Ní maith liom cait, ...

Beidh mé i bhfad ó mo leabhargán go ceann seachtaine.

Ach seans go smaoineoidh mé air nuair a thagaim thar nais.

Suimiúil! Ach ceapaim gur meamhlach agus ní meabhlach atá i gceist.

De réir Uí Dhónaill, is aidiacht é meabhlach agus ciallaíonn sé shameful, disgraceful, deceiptful, treacherous, deceptive, illusory, seductive, beguiling!

In Ó Dónaill, meamhlach = (act of) mewing. Focal eile air ná meamhaíl, dar leis.

Más é meamhlach an gníomh, an réadúil a rá gurb é meamh an fhuaim?

Is mise,

Cé go mbíonn na cait ag meamhlach go meabhlach ní féidir liom mo lámha a chuir orthu mar gheall ar na háiléirge.

Tá seanchat agam,17 mbliana d'aois. Bhí sé cainteach i gcónaí, ach de réir mar a theip ar a lúth (ní féidir leis léim anois) mhéadaigh ar a ghuth. In áit "miabh, miabh" séimh simplí, bíonn gach maamiaaaabhh ilsiollach iltónach in ard a chinn aige, go háirithe ar maidin agus a bhabhla folamh.

To call a cat or attract its attention I have noticed that Irish people for some reason instinctively say the word ' Pis...pis' pronounced ''peeesh..peesh'or sometimes 'pish..pish' To call a calf the word 'soc' is used. To call ducks the word 'huít' is used. To call dogs the words 'hula' or 'hula hairc' are used. Other animals have different words. Dineen's Irish Dictionary has many of these.

As regards the sound made by an 'Irish' cat it would be a variation of the English - something like 'míiaú'

Ba cheart dúinn an cheist a chur ar chat a tógadh le Gaeilge. Is dóigh liom go dtuigeann mo chatsa "An bhfuil tú ag iarraidh amach arís?", ach sin an méid!
