(English language version follows)

Cailleadh ár gcara dil Ethel Brogan oíche aréir, an 5ú lá de Dheireadh Fómhair 2011. Grásta ó Dhia ar a hanam.

Rugadh Ethel Mathews i gCathair Ard Mhacha seacht mbliana is ceithre scór ó sin. Cé nach raibh ach cúpla focal acu sa bhaile, cheap Ethel go raibh sé tábhachtach a teanga féin a fhoghlaim. Chuaigh sí i dteannta a dearthair, John, agus a gcolceathracha go Conradh na Gaeilge. Bhuaileadar leis an Ath. John Quinn, nó wee Father John, mar a thug sí air. Thuig wee Father John gurbh í a gcultúr agus a dteanga féin í an Ghaeilge agus go mba hiad na daoine óga a choimeádach an teanga beo. Dá raibh a fhios aige cé chomh cruinn agus a bhí Ethel óg ag éisteacht leis. Mar thit sí i ngrá leis an nGaeilge.

Tháinig Ethel go Meiriceá i 1946 ach níor chaill sí riamh an grá dá teanga. Bhí sí ina ball sa Gaelic League i bparóiste N. Maitiú in Manhattan in ar bhuail sí le Bill Brogan. Phosadar agus nuair a bhí clann óg acu, bhogadar go Fishkill, New York. Thosnaigh sí ar an nGaeilge ag múineadh i ranganna Adult Ed ann. Agus tar éis tamaill, thuig Ethel go mbeadh seans níos fearr dá scoláirí da raibh deis acu an teanga a chleachtadh. Bheartaigh sí go mbeadh deireadh seachtaine acu in a mbeidís in ann labhairt le chéile go nádúrtha. As an gcéad deireadh seachtaine sin i 1981, d’fhás an gluais Daltaí na Gaeilge. Gluais atá fós beo láidir ag scaipeadh na teangan ar fud na tíre seo.

Is méala mór go deo dúinn bás ár Máthar Ab, ár gcara dil, ár gcarraig chiall.

Ba mhaith le foireann Dhaltaí na Gaeilge comhbhrón a dhéanamh le fear chéile Ethel, Bill, agus lena gclann, Patrick, Bridget, agus Brendan agus a gclann clainne.

Ar dheis Dé agus i measc na nGael go raibh anam Ethel dhílis Brogan.

Ethel, ba bean an-suimúil thú. Níor bhuail mé leatsa riamh, ach go raibh maith agat do do obair. Míle buíochas, agus go mbeannachtaí dia ort. Slán.
