I am having trouble finding the idioms/preposition that needs to be used in such phrases as:

"I have an idea for an activity/book/etc."
"I have a need for a drink."

I do not know if this can be acomplished a different way or what word I would use to convey the meaning of "for".

Go raibh maith agaibh!

Tá smaoineamh agam do/le haghaidh/i gcóir leabhar/gníomhaíocht

Tá gá agam le deoch

(Not the same for at all!)

Yeah, there are lots of different ways to say "for," depending on the situation...

Sometimes in Irish you might not even translate the "for" in at all:

  • Tá deoch uaim for "I have a need for a drink"

  • But yeah, some of the common ones are as Aonghus mentioned:

  • The preposition do, the compound prepositions le haghaidh (+ginideach), i gcomhair (+ginideach), ⁊c.

  • If in doubt, it might be best to look up the general thing you're trying to say to see if there's an idiom for the whole thing, rather than just piecing together a phrase using English syntax and a translation for "for."

Damnú. Chuir mé i gcóir agus i gcomhair trína chéile arís. De mo choir féin, de mo choir féin, de mo mhór choir féin!

(Ní raibh deoch de dhíth orm agus mé á scríobh aréir. A mhalairt ar fad.)
