in the book Gaelic Idioms is has

ill make him eat his word:

Cuirfidh mise a chuid cainte ina ghoile dó

litteraly ,Ill put his talking in his stomach? not tottaly sure on that though.

So maybe along the lines of that, maybe

bhí air a chuid cainte a chur ina ghoile,

just a guess though.
